2016 Popcorn Program
Face it parents: we grew up in a different time. As kids, nothing was handed to us. We either worked or helped to earn our rewards: money, an activity with friends, or something we wanted. Scouting still believes in and stands for the core value of earning!

Benefits to Your Scout and Family:
  • Teaches Scouts the value & process of setting and working toward goals
  • Gives Scouts a strong sense of accomplishment through recognition
  • Enhances communication, leadership skills and confidence in your Scout
  • Scouts can earn valuable rewards including gift cards and prizes
  • Throwing a pie in the Cubmaster's face is priceless!

Goals:
  • There are Pack level goals that will enable the program to be funded throughout the year.
  • This is the only fundraiser our Pack participates in throughout the year.
  • There are Rank level goals that provide a tiered goal structure for the specific Scout Rank levels.
  • ** Specific Goal info will be sent to the Pack via email during popcorn selling season.

Prizes and Rewards:
  • In addition to the prizes Scouts can select from the popcorn vendor, Trails-End, there are various prizes for Scout to earn at the Den and Pack levels based on challenges from the Pack and Council.
  • ** Specific Prize info will be sent to the Pack via email during popcorn selling season.

Ways We Sell:
At this time our Pack only participates in Take Order, Selling at Work, and Online Sales.  We currently do not participate in Show and Sell (selling at Kroger, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Bass Pro).

Door to Door
    • The Scout with his Akela goes door to door with a Take Order Form.  Take Order Forms are provided during the Popcorn Kickoff.
    • The customer writes his/her order on the Take Order Form and the Scout collects the money.
    • The Scout submits the Take Order Form, money, and prize selection on the date specified by the Popcorn Kernel.
    • Popcorn is available for pickup by the Popcorn Kernel and team.
    • Scout with his Akela pick up popcorn when notified by the Popcorn Kernel that it is available.
    • Scout and his Akela delivers the popcorn to the customer within a week.
    • It is requested to collect the money upfront with order, but if there is any pending money due on delivery then that is due to the Pack Treasurer by a specified date.
Selling at Work
    • Akela 'Parent' takes an order form to their work.
    • Fellow co-workers write their order on the order form and the parent collects the money.
    • The Scout submits the Take Order Form, money, and prize selection on the date specified by the Popcorn Kernel.
    • Popcorn is available for pickup by the Popcorn Kernel.

Q&A

A number of questions “pop up” (get it?) each year regarding popcorn sales, so hopefully these answers help if you have the same question.  We will add to this list as your questions come in.

Q: Where can I get a popcorn order form?

A: Your Den Leader should have your form.  If you do not have one, or your Den Leader has run out, or you filled the one you received, please contact your Den Leader or the Popcorn Kernel.

Q: When/Where are order forms due?

A: Order forms should be returned to the Popcorn Kernel at the date communicated via email, usually in mid-October.  Please remember to make a copy of your order form before turning it in.  Den Leaders may assist the Den by collecting and turning them in as a group.

Q: When is delivery of popcorn?

A: We will pick-up popcorn by early to mid-November and available to distribute to the boys over the next couple of days.  You will receive an email when it is time to pick up your order.  The boys will then deliver to their customers.  Tell your customers popcorn will be delivered “mid-November” or “by Thanksgiving week”

Q: When do we collect money?

A: We are asking that you collect money at the time of order.  We would like to have the money turned into the Pack along with your order submission.  If a customer is only ordering popcorn for the troops then you must collect at the time of sale.  If you are unable to collect money at the time of order there will be a requirement to immediately distribute your popcorn and collect payment so the Pack can ensure all money is paid to Council by the Council deadline.

Q: Who should checks be made out to?

A: Pack 1.  The Pack will then write a single check to the Council for all popcorn sales.

Q: Do people get a donation receipt for taxes if they purchase popcorn for the troops?

A: If they want one, they can have one.  It will be provided to the Pack via email during popcorn selling season.  Please print and distribute as needed.

Q: Are popcorn purchases tax deductible?

A: The BSA does not provide tax donation receipts other than the military donation cards (above).

Q: How do online sales work?

A: You need to register your son at the Trail’s End website:  http://sell.trails-end.com/scout/register.  Use the following information when setting up.  Once you have completed the registration process (including parent’s confirmation), you and your son login and go to the “spread the word” tab.  You can step through this process to send emails to friends and family.  When your customer orders, they will want to confirm that your son has been selected as the designated scout to get credit for the sale.  Online sales are delivered directly to the customer in a few days.

Council:    Longhorn

District:    Topsanah

Unit:         Pack 1 - ….

Q: Are online prices the same as door-to-door sales?

A: No, they charge more online, plus shipping.

Q: Are online products the same as door-to-door sales?

A: Not always, sometimes the website has products that are not available door-to-door, and some of the door-to-door products are not available online.

Q: What about sales rewards?

A: Before you turn in your forms, add up all sales totals, including online sales (you can track this using the login your son created if he was doing online sales).  Go to the prize sheet that was included with the order form and select a prize from the appropriate sales category (or a lesser category).  At the bottom of the order form, enter the one chosen reward on the “Reward Chosen:” line.  There is only one reward per Scout.
