May/June 2014 Newsletter
Post date: Apr 29, 2014 8:33:32 PM
Hello all, Well one year is in the books. Even though it seems just like it was yesterday I was writing my first Governors message. I believe this past year was a positive one with strides in the right direction. I want to thank you for allowing me to lead our lodge for another year. I see us continuing the direction we are going, improving and growing as a lodge.
Have you been to Bingo on Tuesday night lately? Even one Tuesday a month to play or volunteer would help. The donation of your time helps us do what we do. Bingo allows us to help and donate to the various charities in the community. One recently that I received a letter from was the Destination Imagination Team from Dover Middle School. These young gentleman and ladies have worked their way through the regional and state com-petitions to qualify to represent New Hampshire in the Global Finals. Even though our donation was just a small part of this it just shows that what we do is important. So if you happen to have a free Tuesday swing on up to Seacoast Bingo Center and spend some time with us.
If you haven’t noticed we are moving forward on the Patio. As with any old building and construction we have hit a few challenges. We are working on them and hopefully we will be right on schedule to open this summer.
I want to bring you up to speed, some of you may have already heard but Moose Interna-tional is doing away with the sign 2 members and your dues are paid. The reasoning is it has not brought in the influx of new members as anticipated. The Lodge officers are in discussion with continuing the program on our own or another incentive program.
As we move forward into the new Moose Year, let’s all work together to make it a good year.
Fraternally yours,
Mike Dean

From the Senior Regent,
Well my year is up, not that I will be that far away. As
I move on to my next step in the WOTM, I want to
thank all of you for all of your support. There have
been some ups and downs but for the most part we
had a successful year. I want to congratulate Tammy
on becoming the New Senior Regent. My hope is that
everybody will support her as much as you have me.
Together we can make the next year as successful as
this one.
Fraternally yours,
Rhonda ,Senior Regent
Kids Easter Party Wrap-up
The Kids Easter party took place at the Moose Lodge breakfast on April 12th. It was
a HUGE success thanks to the help of caring and wonderful Brothers and Sisters
that were able to volunteer their time or were only able to purchase tickets for the
Easter Basket Raffle, it is because of you that 22 children had breakfast with Tommy
Moose, did some games and activities, received a bucket filled with goodies and got
to play with live rabbits.
Congratulations to the winners of the Easter Basket Raffle they were: Rick Flechtner
and Abby Toigo
Thank You for your support!
Sherry Bishop & David Arseneault
SPECIAL RECOGNITION
A very special ceremony was held last Saturday evening, between the
WOTM and Lodge Officer Installations on, April 19. First, the 2013 Moose
of the year was presented to Arthur McGlone, who held our Lodge together
for many years and is still actively involved, especially at Bingo.
Then, The Northeast Moose Association Lifetime Achievement Award
was presented to Jim Parcell, our oldest member and one of only three
Pilgrims from our lodge (Art McGlone and Dolph Toigo are the two others).
Jim was selected from a host of members from Moose Lodges
throughout NH, ME, and VT. Jim joined the Dover Lodge 443 in 1945
when WWII was just ending, and his contributions to our Lodge and Community
throughout his 69 year Moose career are legendary. Upon receiving
the prestigious award, Jim (never at a loss for words) praised all
Moose members for supporting Mooseheart and Moosehaven, and reminded
us of a basic calling of all Moose members - "Try to do something
good for some person, every day." Congratulations, Arthur and Jim!
Moose will be going “Back to Basics” in 2014-15
We have all heard that many of our members, especially new members, have little knowledge
of what the Moose stands for and the causes we support. For this reason, in the coming year,
our Fraternity will be emphasizing the basic principles upon which we were founded – fraternalism;
support of children and seniors in need; and giving back to the communities in which
our lodges and chapters operate.
This basic training for our members will begin with our new membership campaign, appropriately
titled “Moose – Back to Basics.” We are asking our brothers and co-workers to stand
shoulder-to-shoulder and reinvigorate our fraternal bond by becoming advocates on behalf of
the Moose. Not only are we asking individuals to re-educate our existing members, but also to
attract new members who believe in the same basic principles that inspired us to join the
Moose.
For all members who sponsor at least one individual into the Fraternity, “Moose – Back to Basics”
lapel recognition pins will once again be available through all lodges that request them.
All chapters and Moose Legion units will automatically be supplied with pins for distribution.
For each member that qualifies for the 5 Club, $5 will be donated to the Mooseheart School
Renovation project to support the Elementary Academic Center, courtesy of your state association,
the Women of the Moose and the Moose Legion. Again in 2014-15, we are asking each
association to use an additional $5, which has traditionally been collected to ship award items,
as seed money to start a local campaign to help promote membership.
Those individuals achieving Sponsor of Distinction status (sign 25 members or more in 2014-15)
will again have a brick dedicated in their name to the Mooseheart School Renovation Project
and will also be offered free basic registration to the 2015 International Moose Convention in
Nashville, Tennessee. For individuals sponsoring 50 members or more, they will also earn two
tickets to the Moose Fun Night event at the convention; sponsors of 75 or more will earn a free
basic guest registration in addition to their own registration and Fun Night tickets; and those
who sponsor 100 or more members will again earn a free trip to the convention, including airfare
and hotel.
To kick-off the new “Moose- Back to Basics” campaign, all brothers and co-workers who sponsor at least
one new member during May and/or June of 2014 have a chance to win a trip for four to Mooseheart’s
Homecoming Weekend (September 26th and 27th) or Moosehaven’s Chili Cook-off Weekend (November
7th and 8th). Winners will participate in the Homecoming bonfire, pep rally, football game and have dinner
in one of the residences at Mooseheart; or participate in the chili cook-off, community breakfast, classic
car and craft show, and have dinner with the residents down at Moosehaven. Airfare, hotel and transportation
are included in the grand prizes, and other Mooseheart and Moosehaven-related gifts will be
awarded to secondary winners of the raffle. Initial winners will be drawn during the 2014 International
Moose Convention in Las Vegas.
Additionally, for all members attending the 2014 Convention, there will be new breakout sessions
featuring “Basic Training” programs for membership production, retention and new
member onboarding as part of the new interactive initiatives being introduced this year. You
are invited to hear more about the “Moose – Back to Basics” membership campaign onsite
during these sessions, along with a host of other important training opportunities presented
for the first time.
R Robert Dale Scholarship Program
R. Robert Dale served as Secretary/Administrator
of St. Charles, IL Lodge 1368. He was devoted to
the Moose fraternity, its precepts and endeavors.
He never married; never became a father. His
sister married into a modest degree of wealth,
but she never had children either. Following the
death of her husband, she and Robert named
each other in their wills.
Robert survived her - but only by a few months.
Robert Dale died on August 15, 1983, leaving an
estate of more than $2 million, to be divided equally between the Veterans of
Foreign Wars National Home and the Loyal Order of Moose, both for the purpose
of providing scholarships. In 1985, Director General Paul O’Hollaren and the Supreme
Council approved a program in which the interest from the Dale Scholarship
Fund was to be used to provide scholarships for sons and daughters of Moose
members who had graduated from high school, to further their higher education,
and the R. Robert Dale Scholarship Program was created.
Some 1,368 Dale Scholarships - totally $1,368,000 - have been awarded since the
R. Robert Dale Scholarship Program began, with the graduating Class of 1987.
Applicants for the program must be high-school juniors with a grade-point average
of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. They are eligible only if their father, mother,
step-parent, grandparent or legal guardian is a member of the Moose in good
standing.
The number of scholarships awarded to each State and Provincial Moose Association,
is computed based on the current membership of the Association and scholarship
application submitted. This determines whether or not they hold an independent
drawing during their Association convention. If the Association does not
qualify for its own drawing, an at-large drawing is held at Moose International. Any
individual Moose Lodge and its Chapter submitting 20 or more eligible applications
qualifies for a bonus scholarship to be drawn from among just their applicants.
The Scholarship may be used for tuition, books, and fees at any accredited vocational
or academic institution the winner chooses to attend.
Ask Dolph for an application or go to the Moose International Website
