At the International Moose convention this year in Nashville, the new slogan for the upcoming year, “The Time is Now!” was introduced. On the surface it would appear that this is just a catchy buzz phrase dreamed up by some marketing team in hopes of increasing membership. However, if we stop and look at the world around us, these words make sense. We can all try to ignore the hopelessness and despair that surrounds us or we can say The Time is Now! to help someone in need. We can overlook the budget cuts faced by organizations like the Dover Children’s Home and others like it and concentrate instead on ourselves or stand up and shout The Time is Now! to do another fund raiser to assist these kids. We can complain about the toilet paper or paper towels being empty at the Lodge and wait for someone else to replace them or appreciate that The Time is Now! to do my part at my Lodge. There are over 700 men and women members in our Lodge, and countless of you have lived by this motto for many many years. From the unselfish and tireless volunteers that run bingo every Tuesday night, to the men and women that prepare breakfast twice a month to the volunteers at our countless fundraisers and raffles as well as those that do the behind the scenes things like replacing paper towels, stocking the ticket and ATM machines, setting up and breaking down the hall. To these people The Time is Now! has been a way of life. Unfortunately this group makes up a very small percentage of our total membership. The Time is Now! for us all to give a little more of our time, to sign a new member, to do what we can to make our great fraternity even better!

Moose Annual Can Drive
We’ll be gearing up for our annual can drive in October, distributing to local food pantries sometime in November. In the past two years, with help from the American Legion and Dover Elks, we have collected and donated over 10,000 lbs of food and health items to local pantries! Our goal this year is 4000 lbs, which will break our own record. More in the November newsletter.

Halloween Hayride
We will be hosting a hayride at the Emery Farm located on Rte. 4 in Durham on Sat. Oct 16, at 2:00. Kids of all ages can ride the hay wagon to the pumpkin patch, pick out their own pumpkin, try to get in and out of the corn maze, and enjoy the petting barn. Light refreshments will be served, and Halloween bags will be handed out to the kids. We will leave the Lodge at 1:40, or, you can meet us at the Emery Farm at 2:00. Signups appreciated.

Inaugural Moose Charity Poker Run
Many thanks go out the group of volunteers and motorcycle enthusiasts that made our inaugural poker run a huge success. The festivities began on Friday August 27 when a group of bikes took a lap around Lee USA speedway to introduce both the Dover Moose and the Dover Children’s Home to the over 2000 race fans in attendance. On Saturday, volunteers began rolling in at 6:00 am to begin the set up of our parking lot. The fun began at 8:30 am when the motorcycles began rolling in. At 10:15 am, Miss Manchester, Alicia Rossman, sang the National Anthem and by 10:30 am the large group of motorcycles came to life and roared out of the train station parking lot followed by a limo full of smiling children from the DCH. After stops at Lee USA speedway and the Milton Moose Lodge, the motorcycles and over 100 hungry bikers made their way to our parking lot where they were served hamburgers and hot dogs and entertained by the band Branded No Rules. We were very fortunate to have over 50 hard working volunteers give their time (some of whom spent over 13 hours working on Saturday alone!) to this amazing event. Thanks to the following folks!

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we have been forced to raise the price of ALL liquor that we sell. Effective September 1, 2010, all liquor will increase $0.25 across the board. This is in response to the recent increase by the State of New Hampshire. We apologize for the inconvenience.

The Friday night dinners are still going strong. Every Friday at 6:00, come on down and put your feedbag on. There is a different cook and different menu every week
and the cost is only $4.00. All proceeds benefit our Little Legion. Wanna take a turn at the grill? It’s as easy as talking to Mike Dean or Jim Towle.

Kitchen Update
As most of you are by now aware, we have been renovating our kitchen. Although work started off quite slowly, we are now moving along at a decent pace. We will have all brand new electrical outlets, a new (to us) hood and fire suppression system, new flooring, new ceiling tiles, new white board walls, new dishwasher and a few new appliances. Due to the construction, we have had to cancel a couple of breakfasts, but if everything goes according to plan, we begin breakfast again in October. Sorry, but the lodge will be unable to provide breakfast in September. Stop in and check out the progress.

Cribbage Players
Cribbage season starts on Monday, September 13. Interested? Find a partner and come on down on Mondays. Be prepared to play at a brisk pace and match your talents against the old pros. $2.00 to play, cash prize to the winners, skunks will cost you a quarter that will be donated to children’s charities. Play begins sharply at 6:45.

Summer is very quickly coming to an end and as is the case here in New England fall is right around the corner. With a new season comes new challenges, the lawn may not need to be mowed as often, but the leaves need to be raked almost daily. The changing season also brings new challenges to our organization. The Women of the Moose are always looking for ways to change for the better. From new ideas for fundraising events, or better
ways to promote our fraternity and helping Mooseheart, Moosehaven and our community at large. We encourage you all to come to our meeting nights on the first and third Thursday of the month. Our meetings are fun and informative for everyone (we even have door prizes for
those that attend!). What better way to learn about our upcoming events, have your ideas heard and learn more about our great organization?

Important Notice of Special Lodge Vote
The lodge will vote on a $5 increase to our annual dues at the September 23 Lodge Mtg @ 7:30. This is necessary as $32 of each member’s annual dues now goes to Moose International for funding of Operations, compared to $14 just two years ago. Come to the meeting, express your opinion either way, and vote!
