One of Scouting's principles is "doing a good turn daily." Scouts of all levels can participate in good turns and service projects to benefit our community. One of these opportunities is the national BSA Scouting for Food program.
We need LOTS of scout help! With more than 1,200 homes in about 10 different neighborhoods in the Live Oak school area, we need many scout helpers to hang a door hanger for Scouting for Food on every door in the Live Oak area. We want to invite every house to participate in donating food this winter season to the Food Bank of Contra Costa & Solano Counties. If we do not have enough help we will not be able to cover all of the homes in our neighborhoods. Please sign up for 1 or more of the activities to help with this important effort!
Door Hanger Distribution:
Saturday, 11/08 9:30am Live Oak Parking Lot
Scouts and parents will pick up door hangers with designated area to distribute. Please hang door hangers around the Live Oak neighbors front doors letting them know about the Scouting for Food effort. Hanger distribution and map area assignment will be provided to those who signed up. We'd like to ask scouts and families to distribute all the door hangers by the end of the day on Saturday to allow our neighbors to shop for food on Sunday. Scouts are also encouraged to team up wih their friends/dens to go around the area as well.
Food Donations Pick Up:
Saturday, 11/15 at 9am Live Oak Parking Lot
Scouts and Parents will meet in front of the Live Oak Parking lot. Scouts and parents will be split into teams and assigned to a neighborhood to collect food. PLEASE DO NOT COLLECT FOOD YOU SEE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD ON THE WAY TO THE EVENT. Scouts and parents will be placed into groups and assigned to neighborhoods - if you pick up the food on the way to school you will be taking away an important job from a scout. Please refrain from helping until you get your assigned neighborhood. Thank you.
This is a CLASS A activity, please be sure your scout is dressed in their CLASS A Uniform for both door hanger distribution and for food collection. Parents are also expected to stay with their scout throughout the duration of food hanger distribution/food collection events. Also plan to have your scout bring a filled water bottle - the Scouts get very thirsty walking.
We also ask that every family consider helping this effort by leaving food donation(s) on their front porch with their door hanger on Saturday, 11/15 by 9 am. If you are going out of town, you can leave your donations out the Friday night prior. A can of beans or a box of pasta doesn't seem like much to us, but to a hard working scout it's like finding a gold mine! Please reward our scouts good work and help people in need in our greater community. We truly appreciate your consideration and doing a good turn for those in need.
DEADLINE TO SIGNUP:

In 1988, the Boy Scouts of America launched the national “Good Turn,” known as Scouting for Food. It was part of a campaign that targeted what the Scouts called five “unacceptables” in society: hunger, child abuse, illiteracy, unemployment and drug abuse. In 2020, Golden Gate Area Council collected 49,546 pounds of food and received $ 22,843 in donations.
