Cub Scouts is a year-round family program for K-5th grade boys and girls sponsored by the BSA. Cub Scouts promotes leadership & life skills, character development, participatory citizenship, personal fitness, outdoor skills & awareness. The program is run entirely by parent volunteers.
Pack 997 offers a robust scouting program that runs June to June and requires a family commitment. Many rank requirements will be completed during den meetings, but parents are ultimately responsible for working with their scout to complete requirements for the rank badge/awards as well as accompanying scouts at meetings and activities.
Cub Scouts is not a “drop off” activity.
What is the time commitment?
Scouts are expected to attend both:
Once a month Pack meeting - 1st Thursday of the month Sept-May at Live Oak Elementary
1-2 Den meetings per month. It depends on if there is a "go see it" requirement. Each Den consist of 6-8 Scouts of the same grade that will work together on age/grade appropriate adventures and achievements to earn their rank awards.
There are additional optional "pack-tivities" and outings planned that can be attended as families’ schedules allow. They are designed to provide scouts and their families a new opportunity for adventures, teach scouts skills, fitness and/or citizenship and can help with advancement – plus, they are FUN! Some examples are:
Annual Activities: Pinewood Derby, Space Derby, Shoebox Treasure Hunt, Blue and Gold Celebration and End of the Year Picnic Celebration
Outings: Oakland Zoo, Chabot Space & Science, Indoor Rock Climbing, Street Science, San Jose Tech Museum
Overnights: Cal Academy, USS Hornet, Monterey Bay Aquarium
Family Camp Outs: Del Valle, Borges Ranch, Sugarloaf, Camp Roman Oak, Pinnacles National Park
Service: Scouting for Food, Jeans for Giraffes
Cub Scouts is a great opportunity for the whole family to join in the fun! Outside of Den Meetings, siblings are welcome to join most activities and will even have a “sibling spot” at the Pack Meetings.
What are parent expectations?
The Cub Scout program is run entirely by parent volunteers! In other words, if no parents give their time, there will be no program for your children to enjoy. Volunteering is a great opportunity to be part of creating wonderful experiences and memories for your Scout(s) and also your family. It’s rewarding, fun, and easier than you think. A background in Scouting is NOT required. Lots of resources and training are available, and many people will support your efforts.
It is expected that every family will volunteer time to help with Den and Pack-level activities. Whether it's being a chair of a committee or signing up to help set up for Pinewood Derby, every event will require the help of parents. Every bit helps to keep the Pack going.
What's needed to join?
Scouts must be in K - 4th grade, no prior scouting experience is necessary. Incoming 5th graders can only be accepted if they are transferring in from an existing Pack. Each scout needs to purchase Class A and Class B uniform and a handbook.
