00. Preface

This document is being transcribed from a copy of a copy of Henri's autobiography printed by: Walter,William, Harry and Arthur Berney in 1972 in Walla Walla, Washington. As translated by: Ernest & Lilian Cornelius, P.O. Box 1000, Walla Walla, WA. The copy I am transcribing from has some slight modifications (corrections?) to the original printed document. Who was the source of these corrections? I am not sure at this time. George Rochat Portland, OR

Story- Autobiography of Henry Rochat your ancestor

This story was written by Henry Rochat in French in two volumes. It was translated by somebody of your family, probably one daughter of Henry Rochat. I don’t know or remember who brought this translation to SW, maybe Lilian or Alice. I got it from my brother Victor and I can no more ask him who that was because my brother is dead 5 years ago. Anyway my translation was from englisch to French. And some years ago your uncle Don brought me one volume of the original written by hand through Henry Rochat! Don has found this book by the merchant who has bought book! The second volume was no more there, no possibility to find.

2 Feb 1995 Jules Berney

When I saw the original of your Swiss Granpapa, my translation in French from English was already finished for volume 1 and 2. So I surely n… again from french to english! I don’t know who has translated it. Surely somebody of your family Rochat or Berney.

Bill Berney's comment sent to Dorothy Weeks by Marilyn Spark,s Librarian at Penrose Library, Whitman College, 12 Jul 1995.

The "Lil'l Swiss Gran'pap" was completed around 1893, in French by Henry Rochat, and was translated by his granddaughter, Lilian Berney Cornelius. It is very interesting to me, as a lot of the names are familiar to me, since my Mother took us older children on a trip around Switzerland when I was eight years old, to visit our numerous relatives. That was way back in 1901. The Anna, his daughter, he mentions, later became our Mother. The Ulyses, son of Henri Auguste (Berney) later became our Father. They were married after he came to this country.

After the close of this book his two sons settled on farm land along the st. Joe River in Idaho, and my Grandfather settled with them there, for most of his life, amid the green forests which he loved.

We thought this might be of interest to you.

Sincerely,

Bill Berney (Wm. G. Berney)

Marilyn attached a yellow sticky note: Dorothy: This is the source for my understanding that Lilian Berney C. translated Henri's memoirs.

This Bill Berney was the son of Anna & Ulysses. Bill & Dorothy Berney's son also Bill (William G.) survives in the family home at 172 S. Park St. in Walla Walla. He & his wife are very impressed with the Berney and Rochat collections here. M. Sparks. 12 Jul 1985.
