55. Trips to La vallee, Zurich

In the month of, June1878, having placed Eugene with Hauri, we left all of us, as well as Ulysses, for the Suisse Romande [French Switzerland]. We saw Berne with its arsenal, Fribourg and the Cathedral, Lausanne -- and there Ulysses and William left us to go to La Sarraz. I took the two girls to Severy, where they worked in the hay at Lavanchy's. During that time I went on a little tour of Canton de Neuchatel. Having taken Jugenin [MER: Eugene Huguenin] with me, we went to Lausanne to a conference of Darby.

After the haying was over, the two girls and I went to La Vallee. *From there, by Marchairuz and Gimel to Aubonne. We went to Bornallet to visit the Brother Eugene Berney*, then from there to Geneva, then all the way along the lake to Villeneuve, then entering the Valais to Brieg, then we ascended the mountain to the Glacier of Aletch.

In coming back we visited the saltworks of Bex. This trip was made almost entirely on foot. In spite of fatigue, we found much instruction and much pleasure.

The following year [1879] the two girls made a trip to Thillot to see the former Mlle. Marie-- Mme Boileau. Passing at Strassbourg later, they visited Lucerne and other places. With Anna and the Cousin George, they went to Righi, to Einsiedlen, in the Canton d'Uri, stopping in Zürich. Then later, in the Oberland, so that the girls had seen a good part of Switzerland. As for me, I visited Appenzell. I traveled on the Lake of Zürich. I visited the field of the Battle of Sempach and many other places which are worthy of note.
