Technology: This Web Site's Design

Background

If you've followed the technical issues discussion about MyFamily.com and Ancestry.com, we've said:

  • Our members find it difficult to get into the MyFamily.com web site.
  • It's good to have the privacy offered by the MyFamily.com web site.
  • Development of family trees and reports is much better in the computer application called Family Tree Maker (FTM) compared to doing it "on-line" using Ancestry.com.
  • MyFamily.com is a "free" part of Ancestry.com. Ancestry.com contains the structured trees. Ancestry.com costs $$.
  • The quality of uploaded trees to Ancestry.com, where they can supposedly be made available to others, is not the best. Information is left out.
  • It is labor intensive to provide access to the family trees in Ancestry.com. It is difficult for some members to gain access, even when access is granted.

Therefore, I've started this web site outside the Ancestry.com umbrella to use as a repository for the "official" trees, reports, and analyses. This is a technologically challenging effort. It requires the normal web site development, a security mechanism that is easy to use and support, and substantial program development. In fact, when finished, this web site will provide the basis for new standards in the "web genealogy" industry.
