Purpose

This is the official genealogy web site of families with the surname of Leete or Leet in North America. It is sponsored by the Leete Family Association. It is developed and maintained by Duane G. Leet, PhD as a service to the Association. Contents of this web site are the result of 40 years of research and data entry to electronically build the electronic genealogy databases for each of the Leet(e)s who immigrated from England.

This site provides access to historical articles about the Leetes, primarily written or abridged by Dr. Leet.

There is another web site that answers questions about the Leetes submitted to Dr. Leet and provides commentary and interesting topics. The address is https://leeteleetblog.blogspot.com.

There is another web site created by Dr. Leet that contains the course material and notes associated for a class in using the web and sites like ancestry.com. This class has been taught for a few years by Dr. Leet. Examples used in this class were from the Leet(e) family research. The site is https://olliegenealogy.blogspot.com/

Access to Pages

Some pages of this site are "public:" available to everyone. However, like many sites, the majority of the site is "premium" in that you must be a member of the Leete Family Association to obtain access. We don't want to make money off this effort. On the other hand, the information on this site is the result of thousands of hours of work by the lead family genealogist and many contributors. There are also expenses involved in subscriptions to genealogy databases. We need to recover some of these expenses as well as support those doing the work. Limiting access is also the result of privacy concerns. It is discouraging that people, organizations, and regimes around the world attempt to get personal information for no good. The only option is to limit access.

The Names Leete and Leet

According to The Family Face, the Leete name originated in England when last names evolved as a naming convention. George Leete suggests that It probably originated from the Danish Leit and that the Leete ancestors came to England as part of the Danish migration before the year 1000AD. Over time, starting about in the 17th century, the last "e" was dropped from the name by some families. This occurred more often in North America than England.

How to Use This Site

This site has two starting points. The first is a table listing the Leete Family Association approved family trees. This table provides a link to a page for every "root" individual of a branch of the tree. The second is an Excel Workbook with a database containing a list of every individual listed in any of the trees, information about this individual, and links to every tree containing the individual. This workbook can be downloaded and manipulated for research.

You can get to these two starting points using the navigation on the left.

There is also a link to our official Ancestry.com "MyFamily" web page. This is a page we use for ongoing communication. It is true that we could use the Google suite of tools to do what we do on this web site, but this myfamily predates the Google suite, so we are maintaining it for historic reasons.
