Actions in the past taking place once, never or several times;
e.g. He came back from Paris last year.
Actions in the past taking place one after the other;
e.g. The teacher entered the class, greeted the students and began the lesson.
Actions in the past taking place in the middle of another action;.
e.g. While we were discussing the problem, the telephone rang.
