Things to do for the Historian
As mentioned previously Laporte has an interesting history, as does the immediate area surrounding it. We are currently trying to research more about it and welcomes any historians who can tell us more. There is more history than you will have time to absorb in the region, with so many famous castles such as Carcassonne, Montsegur, Foix and beautiful old churches and villages. Archaeologists will also be kept busy with so much pre-history to be found http://www.archaeology-travel.com/europe-sites/france/midi-pyrenees/ and very recently Roman burials were even found in our local village Saverdun, when they were building the new Intermarche!
For the young archaeologists and families have a look at these sites: http://www.ariege.com/paysdestraces/info.html or http://www.grands-sites-ariege.fr/ there are plenty of dinosaur bones and fossils still to be discovered!
Here are some more links with ideas for all ages to enjoy:

The longest underground river in Europe that can be explored by boat is close to Foix, the city that is also famous for its beautiful castle. http://www.ariege.com/chateaudefoix/info.html
Or visit one of the best known castles where 200 courageous Cathars were burnt alive for not giving up their faith at the Chateau de Montségur. This castle also has splendid view over the region. http://www.languedoc-france.info/120719_montsegur.htm
Carcassonne's medieval 12th Century citadel "walled city" is the largest in Europe and is found to be so magnificent that it is one of UNESCO's World Heritage sites. The castle and its surrounding area can present hours of enjoyable site seeing.
