Ecosystem Impacts of Oil and Gas Inputs to the Gulf (ECOGIG)

This project is looking at the impacts of the oil and gas spill from the Deepwater Horizon Rig in April 2010. We are focusing on many impacts related to the deep-sea communities near the wellhead and at natural oil seeps. As part of ECOGIG, we are using long-term sampling instruments to collect samples near the sediment-water interface close to the wellhead and comparing rates of microbial oil degradation to those rates found at natural oil seeps.
