Zlatitsa (Bulgaria)

There are 500 students currently attending St. Paisii Hilendarski General Secondary School in Zlatitsa. The school has provided the necessary conditions for the integrated education of 15 children with special educational needs. The school has been identified as a central school for the region and accepts students from towns and villages situated in the area. Our school is conveniently located in small town named Zlatitsa, about 70 km from the capital Sofia. Zlatitsa is a small and developing town. It is situated near big international gold and copper mining and smeltery companies. This contributes a higher quality of life for the local people and stimulates the development of the town by modern business environment.

Zlatitsa has quite a homogeneous population (Bulgarians) with a very small percentage of other ethnic groups. “St. Paisii Hilendarski” secondary general school aspires to meet the growing need for innovations in the educational system as well as adopt the European educational standards. The teaching staff firmly believes that at the end of their secondary education, the students should be prepared for a quick and successful entry into the job market in the conditions of a very dynamic and demanding economy. In order to meet these demands, our approach is focused on key competencies: English, information technologies, entrepreneurship and civil education. This is accomplished by the series of projects we have developed with partnering institutions such as Junior Achievement Bulgaria, INGOT Centre Bulgaria, the “Teach for Bulgaria” programme, Paideia Foundation, the Centre for Inclusive Education, Aurubis Bulgaria, Chelopech Mining, Elatsite Med.

Students aged 15 to 19 study in the school and have a focused education in entrepreneurship, business and IT. They are actively involved in the national initiatives of Junior Achievement Bulgaria, where they create their own educational companies, demonstrate a number of business and soft skills, such as communication skills and teamwork.

The school successfully combines opportunities for formal and informal education. We have thus established several school clubs that offer extracurricular activities in the sciences, arts and sports through project work. We aim at:

    • motivating the members of the school community to seek personal expression

    • developing a new context for the ‘teacher-student’ relationship

    • forming confidence that the unique vision of the school depends on the school staff.
