Activities for finger spelling
Use some of these acronyms to practise your finger spelling.
Games for Interactive Vocabulary
Dictionary Definitions - read out the definitions and participants have to sign and say the correct answer to win
Quiz - quiz questions for both interactive vocabulary sets.
Go Fish - Provided by Caroline Cummins
In case you are not familiar with the game, "Go Fish" is a card game where you have to collect pairs. Photocopy two copies of each sign learnt during the workshop (ie. Interactive Vocabulary 1 & 2). Each participant is given two different cards and they have to walk around the room asking others:
Participant 1: "Do you have (sign)?"
Participant 2: "Yes, I have (sign)" OR "No, sorry go fish"
Participants keep moving around the room asking each other until all the cards are paired up.
Wipeout! - Provided by Meagan Rudd
Write each word you are teaching or practising on the end of a paddle popstick (one word per stick). For every 5 sticks add one paddle popstick that says WIPE OUT!. Place all the sticks in a cup with the writing at the bottom so they can't be seen. Each participant in turn, takes a stick and signs the word written on it. If they sign it correctly they keep the stick. If they are wrong they have to return the stick to the cup. If a player draws out a stick that says WIPE OUT! they must return any sticks they have collected to the cup. You need to set a time limit for this activity and at the end of the set time, the player with the most paddlepop sticks is the winner.
BINGO
Create bingo cards by drawing 4 vertical lines and 4 horizontal lines to form 25 squares. Write "BINGO!" in the middle square. This middle square is a free space.
Fill in the bingo cards with words from the vocabulary list - or have blank bingo cards and have participants write down the words.
Begin signing the words from the vocabulary lists. Players must then identify the word being signed and find it on their cards.
Continue playing until one player fills in 5 boxes down, across or diagonally and calls out "Bingo!"
If you have extra time, you could rotate the cards and play another round.
