Visit:
Claire descends from the Wakefields of Kirtlignton. The Wakefield family lived at and ran the bakehouse through the second half of the 1800's, after the Trafford family left Kirtlington. Claire's great grandfather, J. D. Wakefield was at the bakehouse in the early 1900's. This family then moved to Aylesbury, Bucks., where they ran a confectioner's shop. Claire was born in Aylesbury.
Claire and her daughter Katie visited Kirtlington and the bakehouse on the 20th of August, 2011. They have kindly sent me the following photos:
This is Claire and her daughter, Katie, with Poppy, at the bakehouse.
Claire's photo of the back yard. Recent owners have tidied up with a "hens-and-chicks" wall, but one old out-building remains intact.
Contributions:
Claire's information about her Wakefield ancestry has provided valuable insight into this more recent phase of the Bakehouse's history (see the History of the Old Bakehouse).
The following is a note from Claire herself:
The Wakefields in Kirtlington
My paternal great grandfather James Dean Wakefield was born in Kirtlington in 1869. He was a son of James Wakefield who described himself as Master Baker of Kirtlingon in the 1881 census and was still a Baker and coal merchant in 1911 with another son Frederick also a Baker and by this time my Great grandfather running his own confectioners shop in Aylesbury. It is not known how the Wakefields came into possession of the Bakehouse and indeed in the 1850s the family were bankrupt, but fortunes must have changed as they appeared to run a good business for at least 40 years. James Dean Wakefield died in 1962, before I was born, but his three daughters spoke of visits to the family bakehouse and I was taken there as a child to see the old house although no photos exist of that day. My ancestors are predominantly Bucks born which makes the Kirtlington connection a rare outsider and therefore of significant interest to me. I believe there are connections among the Wakefields of that era with other families in Kirtlington including Adkins, Collett, Crofts, Darvill, Davis, King, Lambourne, Peedle, Tooley, and Trafford.

Claire was kind enough to send me the following photos from her "family archives" (reproduced here with her kind permission):
This photo taken about 1905 shows Claire's great aunt, Dorothy Wakefield in the back yard of the bakehouse, which was her home.
This photo taken at the same time, also in the back yard of the bakehouse, shows Dorothy with her father, James Dean Wakefield (Claire's great grandfather) and her stepmum.
