The Old Bakehouse ~ Home
This website is dedicated to "The Old Bakehouse", which is located at the South Green in the village of Kirtlington, Oxfordshire, next to the "Dashwood Arms" Hotel.

This photo accurately depicts the natural honey tone that the local stone takes on in bright sunlight ~ as you can see from other photos, its colour can appear different in differing lighting conditions. The local stone colour also changes from one village to the next (becoming grey in Woodstock, light brown in the Heyfords, darker brown near Banbury, and reddish-brown in southern Northamptonshire).

History of The Old Bakehouse and the Trafford Family in Kirtlington:
The bakehouse was built in the early 1700's or possibly the late 1600's. It is first mentioned as one of several properties of Thomas Symons. Thomas lived in Kirtlington through the first part of the 18th century, and died in 1753. John Trafford, born 1706 in nearby Wendlebury, married Thomas' daughter Mary in 1735. Some historical records hint that John and Mary may have lived at one of Thomas' properties. Thomas and John were both farmers of significant acreage in Kirtlington.
In his will, Thomas Symons left ... read more...

April 2009: Christine Barber I will give credit to Christine Barber as the first person to find the old bakehouse. Of course, this is not exactly accurate, as I am certain there are many people who knew it was right there all along. What I mean is that she is the first to help me find it - a very valuable service, given that my research has been conducted from a very long distance (i.e. Oklahoma).... read more ...
June 2009: Ross Trafford (me) and Phil WoodI finally made it to Oxfordshire in June of 2009, having begun my research about 2 years earlier. There I met fellow researcher and fellow descendant of the Traffords of Kirtlington, Phil Wood. Together with our wives, we visited Kirtlington and a few other nearby sites. We met firstly at the Jersey Arms in Middleton Stoney - this inn was originally the Eagle and Child, and had come into the possession of John Trafford (1706-1768) through his second marriage, in 1757. In Kirtlington, we visited the local church (St. Mary the Virgin), a portion of the boundary of Thomas Symons' original property, and of course the bakehouse. ... read more ...
September 2009: Steven Trafford and Dad (Brian Edwin Trafford)Steve was born in Kidlington, Oxfordshire (about 5 miles from Kirtlington) and his wife Jenny was born in Australia - they have been living in Perth, Australia. After finding my research online, Steve and Jenny made the pilgrimage to Kirtlington and other sites in Oxfordshire. They brought along Steve's father Brian Edwin Trafford, who now lives in Bournemouth, Dorset, and visited Brian's sisters and brother who still live in Kidlington. ... read more ...
August 2011: Claire Carpenter and Daughter (Katie) Claire descends from the Wakefields of Kirtlignton. The Wakefield family lived at and ran the bakehouse through the second half of the 1800's, after the Trafford family left Kirtlington. Claire's great grandfather, J. D. Wakefield was at the bakehouse in the early 1900's. This family then moved to Aylesbury, Bucks., where they ran a confectioner's shop. Claire was born in Aylesbury.... read more ...
June 2012: Cathy (Trafford) Roberts and Husband (Jim) and Daughter (Tracey) Cathy and her family visited Kirtlington on a sunny day in June.
