Epee

Epee is the oldest of the conventional (electric) weapons in sport fencing. Originally know as "the dueling weapon," the name was changed after the turn of the century to the present name. This thrusting weapon is distinct in that the whole body is target, and the "right of way" rules enforced in foil and saber, don't apply. For this reason, many fencers feel that epee is the most "realistic" of the three Olympic sanctioned weapons. Another difference is that the amount of pressure to depress the tip for scoring is higher (750gms.) than foil (500gms.) therefore it is often referred to as "the heavy weapon." Between the three weapons, this name is actually warranted since according to FIE rules, foils and sabers are limited to a maximum weight of 500grams, whereas the epee has no such weight limit. Many fencers prefer this weapon simply because they are not required to wear another layer of equipment (target lame) and therefore are more comfortable.
