Listening and Language Development:
Dr. Estabrooks and colleagues write Auditory-Verbal Therapy: Science, Research, and Practice. This text is often used with Listening and Spoken Language professionals. It is an excellent resource for teachers of children who are deaf or hard of hearing (TODs) and other education/health professionals working with the Deaf.
Language Evolution:
Mark Forsyth provides an entertaining view of the way language evolved and where common phrases come from. This is not a boring study of etymology rather a fun exploration of words the way we have come to use them and funny stories that help us better understand English. The connections that Mark Forsyth makes with the reader is witty and deeply appreciated by word nerds. You should read this book if you care about building your language knowledge.
Language Development:
The Language Instinct: How the Mind Creates Language by Steven Pinker
This is a deeply engaging text that I have now read 3X. There are portions that address deafness and creation of visual language. I am a lover of learning about language development, if this is you too, READ THIS BOOK!
Deaf Education:
Literacy Instruction for Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing by Easterbrooks and Beals-Alvarez
This text contains many great resources, there are a few as a literacy advocate I question and look to engage these researchers to ask more deeply questions about a few approaches. It is a staple I will keep on the shelf and worth a read if you are also a literacy researcher.
Deaf Education:
Introduction to Deaf Culture by Thomas K. Holcomb
This course text provided me insight that I had not had and offered some new perspectives on culture and the struggle that the d/Deaf community has within the disability community and community at large. This is a text I will revisit after my studies in a relaxed and informal way to read more deeply about the d/Deaf community. It is worth my time for a second read!
Technology:
The Shallows, What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr
This book has you ponder the effect of web technology and our ability or even how it is reframing and shaping our brains.
Power and Effectiveness:
Change Anything: The Science of Personal Success by Kerry Patterson
Kerry Patterson is the Author of the Influencer a great book, but this book set you up to win and to make a lasting change with a simple formula.
This is a video of me sharing reading strategies for scholars. I use the Kindle and a research matrix for later consumption of high level texts!
