problem-Based Learning (PBL)

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method in which complex real-world problems are used as the vehicle to promote student learning of concepts and principles as opposed to direct presentation of facts and concepts. In addition to course content, PBL can promote the development of critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and communication skills. The PBL activities were designed as an end of the semester assessment to apply the knowledge they obtained towards a goal. 

Separation Challenge

Students will create their own procedures to separate the different components of the mixture using their knowledge of physical properties and separation techniques. At the end, students should be able to identify where they made a mistake, if unsuccessful in separating the mixture, and propose a new method.

Instant hot/ice pack

Using their knowledge of thermodynamics, students will be able to create an ice pack or hot pack using materials of their choosing and developing their own methods.
