Students will create their own procedures to separate the different components of the mixture using their knowledge of physical properties and separation techniques. At the end, students should be able to identify where they made a mistake, if unsuccessful in separating the mixture, and propose a new method.
Using their knowledge of thermodynamics, students will be able to create an ice pack or hot pack using materials of their choosing and developing their own methods.
The first part of the PBL is to create their own methods/procedures to separate the mixture that is given to them.
After they completed the task, the students needed to type up a lab report. As one of my main requirements in my courses, scientific writing is an important skill that I try to develop with my students. This specific activity is done at the beginning of the school year to give students a better understanding of how concise their language must be, unlike creative writing.
