Ecotourism
In this page we present a list of some of the Ecotourism companies that offer their services in Monterrey and its Metropolitan Area in Northern Mexico.
Accordingly to the International Ecoturism Society, Ecotourism is defined as “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment, sustains the well-being of the local people, and involves interpretation and education”. In this context, education is meant to be inclusive of both staff and guests. Accordingly to this definition, you may easily disagree with me that these companies are related to Ecoturism. Unfortunately for you, this issue of definitions is of no interest for me. Like milliones of other human beings around the world I grew up on asphalt streets with little or no contact with nature, so I feel like a tourist every time I go to places such as mountains, lakes and canyons.
Caution note
The contact with nature and ecotourism are fascinating. This list is informative only and if we include some comments these are only to help those who want to venture into this. For no reason are we here to obtain some economic benefit, much less to favor one company over another. If you are interested in having your company name appear on this list, you can contact us (josegarcia_mex AT hotmail.com) and we will gladly include it.
Also, note that some companies perform better than others, like in any other business. Just a couple of days ago (Jul-14-2019) we witnessed how one company (included in this list) left behind some of their costumers, be mindful and ask me or anybody else about who you can and who you cannot trust.

With them I learned about Google Forms (https://www.google.com/forms/about/) to automate the registries. I would also like to comment that we went with them to Via Ferrata and heard very good comments about the acquisition and use of equipment, and with them it is the second time I hear of annuities.

I just took a small rope climbing workshop at the Wall of the Cats in La Huasteca Park in Santa Catarina, Nuevo León, Mexico. I was surprised by the formality of accident insurance and their emails are the first ones I see that include several logos, including the one from Turismo Nuevo León. Their website is also very useful and informative. With them I also learned that some companies handle "annuities" but the details need to be consulted with them.

We have been clients of them several times in Matacanes. They have a beautiful village in the Sierra de Santiago where they can spend the night before the tour. Other companies such as Alpek also offer lodging the night before in cabins.

I had the first trip with them on Sunday June 26th, 2022, to Chipitin. Everything went all right, we were a small group of 5 people with 2 guides, including Oscar who has lots of experience in these activities. Sadly, the whole mountain is running out of water. I also learned, for the first time, that it is not a good idea to travel in the back of a truck all the way through the mountains.

This coming Sunday February 3, 2019 I will take a tour with them to the San Judas Canyon in the Huasteca, Nuevo León. It is important to mention that the policy of Caribu Trekking is to take customers without a minimum of people. This is very good for us because on one occasion another company canceled a tour (one night before!) for not reaching the minimum number of people, and at least my personal agenda was moved a lot. Also I had already paid for the tour and they did not want to reimburse me (it was not part of their policy), what they did was to change the date. In the end it turned out well for everyone and if you enjoy the journey a lot, but if it is worrying for us, the clients depend on a minimum of people to enjoy the walks and experiences. On July 4th, 2021, we will have a trip to "Cozumelito" ubicado en Allende Nuevo León. This is the first time I hear about this place.
Three days before the trip, on July 1st 2021, one of the organizers asked to sign a "responsive letter" stating the following:
Por medio del presente yo deseo manifestar que mi estado de salud y condición física es el óptimo. Por lo tanto puedo desempeñar sin problema alguno la actividad física que estoy a punto de iniciar, lo cual corresponde a un recorrido tipo caminata en montaña o cañón entre la sierra.
Estando completamente consciente de que realizar este tipo de actividad física conlleva un riesgo hacia mi integridad en cuanto a accidentes y lesiones
Por lo que declaro bajo protesta de decir verdad:
Que no padezco ningún tipo de enfermedad que impida desempeñarlas actividades que requerirán de mi esfuerzo físico, estando de acuerdo en asumir la completa responsabilidad y riesgo de cualquier lesión que pueda resultar de mi participación en dicho recorrido,
Igualmente me hago responsable, en el caso de tener una situación médica conocida o desconocida preexistente como alergias, enfermedades, que potencialmente me pudieran prohibir o limitar mi participación en el evento
Adicionalmente, eximo, deslindo y esto de acuerdo en no levantar ninguna denuncia o demanda que esté dirigida al resto de los participantes, la administración o al guía o guías por ninguna causa que pudiese incluir cualquier daño, robo, lesión, muerte accidental o cualquier tipo de situación que pueda resultar en mi participación
Por lo ya antes mencionado libero a los guías, organizadores y demás participantes en el recorrido por cualquier enfermedad o padecimiento que se pueda detectar ya que con anterioridad he notificado que me encuentro totalmente sano.
This is interesting for several reasons, but I would only like to comment that the real ecotourism companies actually offer an insurance that is included in the cost of the trip. These people charge for the trip, and also require you to sign that letter, which may not be even useful in a legal scenario.

On Sunday, July 10th, 2022, we visited Charco Azul and La Cascada de la Cebolla in Allende, Nuevo Leon. The tour started at 5:00 am with an emotive motivational speech where the manager emphasized, in a funny bossy way, several aspects of the "adventure":
Watch out for snakes.
Don't drown.
The "company" is not resposible for absolutely anything, they do not provide any insurance whatsoever.
We were "lucky" for going with them, because compared with other companies, they were the cheapest.
Don't do "mensadas". I am not sure at what point exactly we were not supposed to do that.
Half the group enjoyed going back in the big truck to the parking spot with some shade, while the other suffered, what I have had suffered before, of a massive sun burnt for about 2 hours. This is not only very unpleaseant but also very dangerous for health. It is also worth mentioning that the manager never mentioned during her speech the most important word: "enjoy" [what you paid for]. Other than that, and especially because we were part of the of the privileged group that enjoyed the shade on our way back, I had a marvelous day in company of the best people in the world.

ROCKET EXCURSIONES does not exist anymore. However, I left them here as a reminder that the death of Luis Alfredo Hernández Coronado on Sunday, September 15th, 2019, could have been prevented, that Luis was not simply going with friends (he paid money to the company for the tour), and, more importantly, that everyone who is involved in Cañonismo in Nuevo Leon must always pursue the best in equipment and training for their company, their collaborators, their customers, and the future of their marvelous adventures.

Excellent company in particular with different aspects of customer service such as food (for example, crackers should arrive intact to the customer as part of their philosophy). The owner offers a course of 16 classes to become a guide that all of his people have to take before collaborating with them. In addition a first aid course is also required.

Parque Ecologico La Huasteca
I wanted to add a few things about this place that may be useful for you
In March 2019 I talked to the owner and in April I stayed there over a weekend. This is a wonderful place that can accomodate up to 50 people. About 300 meters from this place there is small cave (about 2 meters tall, 2 meters wide, and 10 meters long) that crosses the mountain. This video is a view of the sunset, this video is a view from the other side of the cave early in the morning and this video is from inside the cave.

I have never stayed in there but I think it is very cool to have a hostel in that place. The place does not show any phone number sorry and it also does not appear in hostelworld.
