Another minor repair I had to do on my GSXR was to replace the stator. Apparently they were a weak point in the electrical systems of 2007-2008 models, and mine went bad one hot summer day when I was riding up to the lake while charging my mobile from a socket I'd recently wired in directly to the battery. The battery could clearly take a charge from an external but wasn't charging while underway, and pop-starting a 400-pound bike gets old pretty fast.
Diagnosing this was cake based on good info from the gixxer forum. For charging issues the culprit is either the rectifier/regulator or the stator (the two components packaged together as "alternators" in most cars). The output of the regulator should be a clean 14v, which mine clearly wasn't, so I jumped right to the stator. The stator has 3 output leads, and it should generate 50-60 (ac) volt difference when testing 1-2, 1-3, and 2-3. As you can see in the video, mine clearly wasn't, and as you can see in the pic below, one of the coils turned out to be badly charred. I found a replacement on Ebay for $140, which was a third of what the local shop wanted to charge me.
