Here are a few great destinations for a quick daytrip during your stay at Birch Bay Retreat.
EAA AirVenture Museum, Oshkosh, Wisconsin (1 h drive). Visit a collection of more than 200 historic aircraft, plus more exhibits, galleries and displays -- one of the most extensive aviation museums in the world.
Wisconsin Dells (1 h 15 min drive). -- One of Wisconsin's favorite tourism areas -- world-class water parks, dining and entertainment.
Canoeing and Kayak trips -- There's fantastic paddling nearby on the Fox or Mecan Rivers. Get some exercise and experience the local wildlife! Equipment can be rented from Mecan River Outfitters & Lodge, who also will provide basic instruction, river maps and help with route planning, and van transport to and from the river ($45-55 per canoe; $34-$36 per kayak as of May 2015). Or, bring your own canoes or kayaks, and explore on your own.
Circus World Museum -- Baraboo, Wisconsin (1 h 20 min drive). Visit a museum dedicated to the history of the Ringling family and their circus, and then move on to the live shows: a Big Top circus, magic show, kids activities, and more! A great family outing.
Aldo Leopold Nature Center -- Monona, WI (1 h 40 min drive). Two interactive exhibits (Nature Nook and Climate Education Center), nature trails, and public outdoor nature programs, designed with families in mind.
International Crane Foundation -- Baraboo, WI (1 h 20 min drive). Visit the sandhill crane families that are being housed and cared for at the ICF, and learn about the Foundation's conservation efforts.
