From Kochi to China: One Team, Endless Stories
Powered by curiosity, group photos, missed sleep, unlimited walking, and leadership diplomacy.
All together, the China tour turned out to be a memorable, joyful, and surprisingly philosophical journey — one that travelled not only through cities and monuments, but also through history, humour, rain, confusion, friendship, snacks, and human resilience.
The adventure itself began with a dramatic lesson on the unpredictability of life: missing the connecting flight from Singapore to Beijing on the very first day! For a few tense hours, I genuinely felt that our only remaining option was to quietly return to Kochi, carrying back our dreams along with our luggage. With no original visa in hand and uncertainty over whether even Tasli would clear emigration formalities, the situation resembled a suspense thriller more than an international tour. Yet, as often happens in life, panic slowly transformed into comedy. In the middle of the chaos, we were privileged to witness Shaiju’s legendary “telephonic wholesale business negotiations,” conducted with such confidence that one could almost believe international trade agreements were being settled from the airport lounge itself.
Fortunately, beyond that opening chapter of suspense, the entire journey unfolded beautifully. The group itself became the soul of the tour — caring, cheerful, humorous, and wonderfully supportive of one another. Damodharan Mash elevated the trip into literature through his elegant poems; songs, stories, life experiences, and endless jokes flowed freely among the members. And thanks to Balakrishnan Mash and others, it often felt less like a tour bus and more like a moving bakery across China — snacks emerging endlessly from mysterious bags with astonishing continuity.
Guides:
The guides too played their roles well. Angela, our first guide in Beijing, was exceptionally caring and warm. However, for reasons still hidden somewhere within the mysteries of Chinese geopolitics, Tasli suddenly “retired” our beloved “Gundumony” during the Shanghai leg and introduced a new guide who, with his round cheerful appearance, earned the affectionate title of “Snowman.” History may never fully record the reasons behind this diplomatic transition.
Food:
The food throughout the trip deserves special appreciation. Unlike many package tours where food becomes a survival exercise, here it was genuinely enjoyable and abundant — a rare and pleasant surprise. Except for the Indian dinner on the first night and the second day lunch, the food experience throughout the trip was genuinely excellent. Those two meals, despite having plenty of items, were prepared so poorly that even the food we lovingly prepare for cattle back home might have shown greater culinary dignity and emotional depth! Without exaggeration, I would rate that particular restaurant experience as the weakest part of the entire journey. Perhaps Tasli may consider avoiding that Indian restaurant in future tours, in the interest of both gastronomy and Indo-Chinese relations.
Thankfully, the situation improved dramatically afterward. I believe the majority of the group thoroughly enjoyed the Chinese food, and credit must go to Tasli for making quick adjustments at short notice. The Indian food served in Shanghai during the final two days was truly excellent — perhaps the chefs there had rediscovered both spices and compassion.
The breakfasts overall were quite good, but Beijing clearly won the competition with greater variety and better spread. In fact, some mornings felt less like breakfast and more like a small international food summit.
Visits:
One of the most emotional moments was standing atop the Great Wall of China at Juyong Pass — the very wall we had only seen in school textbooks decades ago. Built over centuries by emperors to guard ancient China from invasions, it stretched before us like a stone dragon across the mountains. To finally stand there, after a lifetime of merely reading about it, felt like stepping into the pages of history itself.
The acrobatic show in Beijing was absolutely mesmerising. The precision, discipline, flexibility, and artistic brilliance of the performers made one thing abundantly clear: when it comes to acrobatics, the Chinese are operating in an entirely different universe.
The Olympic Nest Stadium photo session gave us a glimpse into modern China’s ambition and global confidence, while the Summer Palace reminded us of imperial elegance, where emperors once escaped the harshness of politics to seek peace beside Kunming Lake.
Rain tried its best to sabotage parts of our Beijing experience, but even then Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City carried an indescribable historical gravity. Tiananmen — the symbolic heart of modern China — and the Forbidden City, once inaccessible to ordinary citizens for nearly 500 years under the Ming and Qing dynasties, reminded us how power itself builds walls, rituals, and myths around it.
Shopping at Bairong World Trade Centre was another unforgettable experience — partly for the bargains, partly for the confusion, and partly because many of us returned wondering whether we had mastered negotiation or had merely become victims of highly sophisticated smiling mathematics.
The bullet train journey from Beijing to Shanghai at nearly 350 km/h was itself a technological wonder. As villages, rivers, and skyscrapers flashed past the windows like moving paintings, one could not help comparing ancient Silk Road caravans with modern China’s astonishing speed of transformation.
Our first evening at Shanghai’s Jade Buddha Temple brought a contrasting calmness. Amid the hyper-modern skyline of Shanghai, the temple stood quietly preserving centuries of Buddhist spirituality and silence.
The night cruise in Shanghai was crowded, almost like the whole world had decided to sail together that evening. But thanks to Tasli’s timely advice, many of us secured the upper deck and enjoyed breathtaking views of Shanghai’s illuminated skyline — where futuristic skyscrapers rose beside colonial-era buildings like a conversation between past and future.
The visit to the 118th floor of Shanghai Tower — one of the tallest buildings in the world — was unfortunately sacrificed to clouds and rain. Yet the elevator ride itself became an engineering experience to remember: ascending at nearly 18 metres per second and descending at 10 m/s, leaving our ears struggling to negotiate with gravity.
Shanghai History Museum was truly impressive, beautifully narrating the city’s transformation from a modest fishing village into one of the world’s great financial capitals. Yu Garden, with its classical Ming Dynasty-style architecture, bridges, ponds, and pavilions, was charming despite the crowds and persistent rain trying to play villain once again.
Nanjing Road shopping was decent, though perhaps not as extraordinary as legends suggested. Still, walking through one of the world’s busiest commercial streets had its own energy and spectacle.
The final day perhaps brought the most balanced happiness. Zhujiajiao Water Town — often called the “Venice of Shanghai” — was enchanting. With ancient canals, stone bridges, old tea houses, boat rides, and traditional village life, it offered a peaceful contrast to the glass towers of modern China. Tasting local snacks there added another layer of joy to the experience.
For once, the weather finally showed kindness in the afternoon, blessing us with a wonderful photo session at the Bund, where colonial architecture from old Shanghai stands proudly facing the futuristic skyline of Pudong — almost like history and modernity staring at each other across the Huangpu River.
Shopping at AP Market and Xintiandi turned out to be truly enjoyable. Bargaining skills evolved dramatically by then; many members who initially feared negotiation had by now transformed into confident international trade specialists.
Now we await the final leg of the journey — returning from Shanghai to Kochi via Singapore — carrying not just luggage and shopping bags, but memories, laughter, friendships, historical reflections, and enough snacks to possibly sustain a small village.
Final thoughts
And somewhere beneath all the excitement lies another quiet truth: however grand the cities we visit may be, many among us still carry an eager longing to return to the simplicity, familiarity, and emotional warmth of our own home villages. Perhaps that is life’s final philosophy — after wandering through the wonders of the world, the heart ultimately searches for the road back home.
