On the typed, transcribed census records index for Stokes, Shores Reed District, the name is typed as Gus Martin. On looking at the actual image and the ancestry.com index, it looks to be poorly written but I do believe it is actually Geo.

There is very little information available on the Shores Reed District Martins. I THINK that they leave after the 1810 Census.
Most of this is hypothetical and needs corroboration.
We are trying to located the parents of James and George Martin who appear in the 1850 Newton County, Mo census. James and George may be cousins or brothers.
The reason I am working on George as the parent of at least one of the two men is because:
James Martin named his first son Isaac after his wife's father (Isaac Burrus)
James Martin named his second son George.
George Martin named his first son Thomas and his second son William.
In 1820, on the census index for the whole State of Tennessee, there are 11 Georges and 21 James. I have looked at all of the George's listed in the index and most of the James, but not all. The index has errors not only in names, but in what county is recorded for the person. I also question whether the census takers put "people" in the wrong age brackets, as I have seen done in some of the later records...1840 and 1850. We are looking for a George Martin and a James perhaps close together and I found a George Martin Sr., a George Martin Jr. and a James Martin in Gallatin, Sumner County, TN. The George and James we are looking for should not have any children and should be ages 16 and 19 in 1820. On this particular record, they are listed in the 26-45 age bracket. James is listed with a female child under 10. (This is Sumner Co. page 33 of 52 on ancestry.com) So, this may or not be the correct families. If it isn't correct, I cannot find anyone else. Maybe they were in route somewhere.
1830: Janice Crouch whose correct email I do not have, is also looking for this family. She suggested that in 1830 James might be the one in Cooper County, MO. The Cooper County, Mo James has one male between 30-40 and one male between 20-30. Our James should be 29 with no children. The Cooper County, MO George is listed as being 30-40 and has younger children, when our George should be 26 with no children.
1830: I looked at Sumner County, Smith County, Marion County and Tipton County. The George's and the James do not work in Sumner or Smith. In Tipton County there is a James who could be correct in that he is listed as 20-30 with no children or wife. I don't know where George is.
1833: On ancestry.com in the U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914 for George Martin, there is a George Martin who fits and I believe is ours. He is listed as 27, with dark hazel eyes, dark hair and a dark complexion. He is 5'9" and from Stokes County, NC. He is a farmer and he registered in Gallatin, TN. He COULD be the same George as in the 1820 census above in Gallatin who might have been in the wrong age bracket. He was discharged for a disability on Sept. 19, 1833 at Jeff. Barracks, Mo.
1836: There is a George Martin, Thomas, Brice, Ruth, Henry, Robert, Samuel and Joseph Martin on the 1837 Tax List in Overton, County TN.
The 1840 Census has a George and a James Martin listed in two different townships, one is Sarcoxie and one is Marion, but both in Newton County, MO. It is thought these are the same men as the ages for the men and the ages of the male children are exactly the same. However, the ages for the females are different. In one township James has 2 females and in the other township he has 3. George has only one female in the household, as it should be, but she is in one age column in one township and in another age column in the other township.

James Martin, between 30-40;

1 male between 5-10 (George & Isaac) Childrens ages don't quite add up
1 fem bet 15-20, Elizabeth is 8 Correct Family?
1 fem under 5
1840 MO Newton Co. Marion twp.
George Martin, between 30-40, (b. 1800-1810) possibly married Linda Carter
1 m under 5, William
1 male 5-10, Thomas
1 female 5-10 Martha J. No wife?
Does it connect???
Where did the George/Thomas/John Martin who are only in Stokes Co., NC for a brief period come from? Since we are looking at the close DNA results of John Rockhouse Martin, and two other test kits; I would guess that the Shores Reed group of Martin's, if really connected, came from the area of Caroline County, VA.
