In the Beginning:
The date is the 20th of April 1694, Governor of the Colony, Sir Edmund Andros granted to Francis Meriwether 299 1/2 acres in the County of Essex for the importation of 6 people into the colony.
On the xx day of November 1695 Francis Meriwether sold the land to David Catlett.
On the 10th day of August 1696 David Catlett sold the land to Robert Brooks.

On 7 July, 1732 Robert Brooks and Tobias Ingram conducted an exchange of land where Tobias Ingram and his wife Jane ended up with the 299 1/2 acres from the original patent of Francis Meriwether. A copy of this document can be found on Family Search Film # 7645202 Scans 430, 431 and 432 of 497 scans. Or Essex County Deed Book Vol. 19, 1728-1733, pages 310-314.
On the 2nd of September 1732 Tobias Ingram sold to James Samuel and John Martin 99 1/2 acres of land "for and during the full space time on term of twenty and one years" ...being part of a tract of land granted to the said Tobias Inghram by Major Robert Brooke lying and being in the parish and county above stated etc..." Document found on Family Search Film #7645202 Scan 444 of 497 scans, or Essex County, Va Deed Book Vol. 19, 1728-1733, pages 339-341.
On 8 April 1736 a deed was written with James Samuel selling to John Martin 100 acres of land, part of a track of land from Tobias Ingram. Note that John Martin was called a Brickmaker in the deed. Document found on Family Search Film #7645203 Scans 242, 243 and 244 of 394 scans or Essex County, VA Deed Book Vol. 21, 1735-1738, pages 152-156.
In John Martin's Essex County will probated 16 June 1741, John leaves "all the land" to his son James. In May of 1765 James Martin gets a mortgage on the 100 acres from John Broaddus for a debt due by James Martin to Broaddus. On the 16th day of September 1765 the deed was fully proved by Francis Barbee and ordered to be recorded. Document can be found on Family Search Film #7823170 Scans 48-49 or Essex County, Virginia Deed Book Volume 30, 1765-1772, pages 53-54.
In Essex County Court Records for the 21st day of September 1767 a deed of indenture is recorded between James and Mary Martin his wife to John Chenault. The actual copy of the deed has not so far been found. Thank You Grant for finding this for me.
In 1768, on page 100, the Rowan County, NC Tax List of William Spurgin lists a James Martin and son John, with 2 polls. Theory is that James Martin had moved from Essex, VA to Rowen/Surry/Stokes NC.
In 1774, John Chenault of Caroline sells to John Martin also of Caroline County all the land John Chenault bought from James Martin, 100 acres, reserving to Mary Martin her life estate. Essex County VA Deed Book 31, 1772-1780, page 228.
On the 3rd November 1804 John Martin and Nancy his wife of the County of Caroline sold to John Spindle of the County of Essex 100 acres of land excepted the graveyard, ...the land the said James Samuel had purchased of Tobias Ingram....."the same being the land the said John Martin's father purchased of the said James Samuel containing 100 acres, the graveyard excepted"....Signed by John Martin and Nancy Martin. This deed can be found in Deed Book 36, 1802-1805, Pages 408-410 or Family Search Film #7645206 Scan 497 of 560. This document proves that this John Martin and assumed Nancy Tod Martin was the son of John and Mary Samuel Martin.
