Original stock when the house opened
Taken in 1972. Lions in the nearest cage with a leopard just visible in the smaller one behind it.
This appears to be the same tiger, as there are some distinctive stripes. Possibly a series of photos was taken at the same time.
Tiger, 1906.
Re-sited from the old lion house, now on the new
lion enclosure.
An unusual and touching memorial plaque, re-sited on the new lion terraces.
Also re-sited. The 'S' has been inserted at some point after the original sign was made,
Showing the location of the 1876 house in relation to Three Island Pond. The four great cages and three smaller ones are clearly visible. The rectangular cages in front of these were for cheetah. Riding tickets were sold from a window on the NNW end and a small outdoor cage was later added at the SSE end.
I have requested permission to use this image as it is probably subject to copyright but have not received a response. It may be that I have to remove it in due course but it is the most evocative image I have found of the old lion house in the late 1960s, early 1970s. The roar of an adult lion waiting for food is one of my earliest memories of the zoo.
