To test the cube, I flipped it upside down and dragged a 1KΩ to ground wire across the cathodes while the anodes were powered. The animated image below shows me moving it around and the pillars lighting up. A few of them show two pillars lit up at the same time because the wire was touching two cathodes. A few images have no lights on because the wire is not touching any cathodes. The control circuits will do a similar task as well as change which anode layer is powered. By specifying an anode and a cathode, any LED can be turned on, and by mixing the brightness of the red, green, and blue components, any color can be made.
