Resumo: Dentre os intelectuais espíritas, é recorrente o nome de Herculano Pires como um de seus maiores expoentes em todos os tempos. Considerando-se a importância intelectual deste autor no panorama espírita mundial, objetiva-se analisar a vida de José Herculano Pires e sua influência política e doutrinária nas organizações espíritas. Em seus pontos específicos, almeja-se resgatar como ele entendia a inserção do intelectual espirita no Espiritismo, na cultura, e na política. Constatou-se que Herculano Pires contribuiu, intelectualmente, e politicamente, para o Espiritismo e a sociedade brasileira. Como intelectual, fomentou diversas iniciativas dentro do movimento espírita, como a realização de congressos e instituições de cultura e pesquisa, tal qual o Clube dos Jornalistas Espíritas de São Paulo, com o objetivo de divulgar o Espiritismo em todas as formas de imprensa, bem como propor 'a manutenção da pureza doutrinária', isto é, a tomada dos princípios kardequianos como núcleo duro, ou irremovível, da cultura espírita. Igualmente, Herculano Pires fundaria a primeira instituição de Parapsicologia do Brasil, conhecida como Instituto Paulista de Parapsicologia, com objetivos acadêmicos e puramente experimentais sobre os fenômenos psíquicos. Também auxiliou na elaboração dos diálogos das personagens da novela 'A Viagem', com o intuito de deixá-los mais fidedignos à perspectiva espírita. Na sociedade, foi defensor da escola laica, pública e universal. No campo das ações humanas, fugiu à política tradicional, isto é, à política partidária. Dentro das concepções sociológicas analisadas, sua vida intelectual pode ser compreendida como a de um ideólogo que, ao utilizar-se da palavra e das ideias nelas representadas, forneceu princípios-guia a serem executados pela sociedade. Igualmente, buscou a construção de uma hegemonia do Espiritismo e sua absorção pela cultura de massas através das instituições de cultura que patrocinou.

Abstract: Amongst the spiritist intellectuals, the name of Herculano Pires is well-known as one of their greatest exponents at all times. Relying on secularism and non-partisanship of Spiritism, as recommended by its founder, he did not avoid, however, to militate and influence both the culture and policy of the spiritist movement in Brazil and in the World. Moreover, he has also brought some significant contributions to non-spiritualist Brazilian culture. The objective of this paper is, thus, to analyse the intellectual life of José Herculano Pires and his both political and doctrinaire actions over some spiritist organisations. Based on Pires achievements, this work analyses how to understand the inclusion of a spiritist intellectual in the culture, politics and spiritist movement. As an intellectual, he promoted several initiatives within the spiritist movement, as hosting conferences and creating cultural and research institutions such as Spiritist Journalists Society (‘Clube dos Jornalistas Espíritas’) of São Paulo and an institute of parapsychology in Brazil, known as ‘Instituto Paulista de Parapsicologia’. This cultural-intellectual association, in addition to the promotion of the Spiritism in all forms of media, influenced the spiritist culture, highlighting ‘the maintenance of the doctrinal purity’, that is, taking the Allan Kardec’s principles as hard core, or non-removable theory, of the spiritist culture. He advised the author of the soap opera ‘A Viagem’ in the development of the dialogues of the characters, in order to make them more reliable to the spiritist perspective. In the society, he was a defender of secular, public and universal education. In the field of human actions, he strongly rejected the traditional policy, that is, of political party structure. Based on the sociological concepts adopted in this work, his intellectual position can be understood as of an ideologue, to whom by using up words and ideas represented on them, provided guiding principles to be implemented by the society. He also promoted the hegemony of Spiritism and its absorption by the mass culture through the cultural institutions which he supported.
