Course Title: Design and Production of Multimedia/Hypermedia Learning Environments

Reflection: This course is designed to be offered as the second half of a two-semester process for graduate students to explore the intricacies of actually putting to practice the design principles which they have been learning for the past several semesters. As per university guidelines, prerequisites for the course are either having completed EDIT 730 or with the permission of the instructor. Not having completed EDIT 730, I presented my case to Dr. Bannan as this was the final EDIT course I needed in my program plan towards completing my coursework. In support of my plea, I offered to take a distinctively different approach to completing coursework requirements versus attempting to integrate myself into one of the pre-existing teams of students already well along in the design of their projects. As such, I presented the instructor with a modified syllabus outlining the differences in criteria, which I offered to be held to, in order to sufficiently demonstrate Ph.D.-level work which also advanced my own academic goals.
Whereas the student teams were already well on their way to producing a variety of smartphone applications addressing a range of hypothetical concerns, I offered to (a) act as a consultant to each of the teams as much as possible and (b) evaluate their final products based upon a self-created rubric which intertwined my research, academic, and professional interests between Adult Learning Theory and instructional design for multi-media environments.
The results of this experiment involved one unforeseen hiccup - the fact that I would need to wait until each of the projects was completed before I could apply my rubric. With this disadvantage, I elected to request an Incomplete at the normal end of the semester and completed my analysis and the requisite paper during the summer of 2010.
The culmination of this course for me provided the incubus for what I believe will be the basis for my dissertation.
