Attitude toward Religion Scale

A scale for assessing people's positive/negative attitudes toward religion and its role in society (see details below).

Scale Info

All 12 items load together (eigenvalue = 7.07; Cronbach's alpha = .936; N = 559). Half of the items are positive; half are negative. Reverse score the negative items before aggregating to obtain a positive attitude score. Among a sample of 559 American adults (288 male, 271 female; Mage = 32.2 years, SD = 12.40), individuals self-identifying as Believers ("I believe that God exists"; n = 286) scored M = 6.81, SD = 1.35 on the scale. Those who self-identified as Non-believers ("I do not believe that God exists, or I have significant doubts about the existence of God") scored M = 4.34, SD = 1.35.

From Piazza, Landy, & Goodwin (2012). Unpublished data. N = 559.
