1992
Jaguars Get Ever so Close, Make it to Semi-Finals
In Jack Garrity's third year the Jaguar Machine were poised to make more noise in the AAA football scene. After graduating 16 starters from the previous year's squad, the 1992 team returned just six starting positions. The enthusiasm for Jaguar football was back within the community and the school which attracted athletes from other sports to join the team. Out of the 16 starting positions that needed filled, 7 of the players were first year participants. The new additions, plus the strong play of the returning starters and players ensured they would not let the Jaguar faithful down.
The team finished 9-1 in the regular season, winning the Big 7 Conference, before losing to eventual WPIAL Champions the Blackhawk Cougars in the semi-finals. The semi-final match-up may have been one of the greatest games played in Thomas Jefferson's storied history. The game saw a comeback from TJ, after being down 28-7 at the end of the third quarter, to gain the lead at 28-29 with minutes left; only to lose on a desperation fourth down and 11 touchdown pass in the last minute.
The 1992 season witnessed new school records when Keith Miller broke Jim Giansante's single season touchdown record that stood for 14 years, and the single season rushing mark at 1,516 that clipped Pedro Bowman's 1980 mark of 1,495. Brandon Adams established himself as the schools' career leader in passing yards and touchdown passes.
The defense played tough, and continued their dominance from the previous year with George Wilson coordinating. They only yielded 8.7 points per game with 3 shutouts, and were led by seniors Matt McClelland (ILB), Kirk Cappezutto (OLB), and Matt Dorsey (CB) who established himself as the all- time interception leader in school history (18).
The offense worked behind a terrific front line that included: Ashley Fluhme, Matt McClelland, Randy Smith, Jeremy Maxa, Mike Baileys, and Matt Schwer. They put up astronomical numbers running the football with Keith Miller, Kirk Cappezutto, and Aaron Brettshneider. The passing game offered another dimension with the return of the previous season's quarterback Brandon Adams and talent at the wide receiver position with senior Heath Seimon and Junior Tom Alexander. The offense scored an average of 30 points per game.
The atmosphere around this team was serious but good natured, and the team was a close knit group. Many leading publications, news outlets, and even sportscasters in the Pittsburgh area called the final game of the '92 season with Blackhawk the true championship game, as Blackhawk went on to the PIAA state playoffs winning in convincing fashion until the championship. The Jaguars came up one minute too short this season, but what a great season it was!
