Melenie Dickinson came to the United States from Great Britain in 1965 with nothing to her name but a suitcase and a nursing credential. She still supports herself working as a registered nurse at the Stanford University Hospital, but a series of good real estate investments over the last nine years enabled Dickinson to come to the rescue when Rainbow general manager Rayona Sharpnack approached her with the idealistic proposal that she back a team managed and coached by its players. Though she had never seen a softball game until the 1978 world Series, Dickinson was immediately hooked on the sport and the spirit of the San Jose players. “The more I see of softball, the more I like it,” Dickinson told San Jose Mercury Sports Editor Dan Hruby. “I might even get a glove and play some catch one of these days.”
