Chapters 34-38

Chapter 34: Saba

5 But those who strive against Our revelations, challenging (Us), theirs will be a painful doom of wrath.

8 But those who disbelieve in the Hereafter are in torment and far error.

12 And such of them as deviated from Our command, them We caused to taste the punishment of flaming Fire.

38 And as for those who strive against Our revelations, challenging, they will be brought to the doom.

41 Nay, but they worshipped the jinn; most of them were believers in them and We shall say unto those who did wrong: Taste the doom of the Fire which ye used to deny.

45 They denied My messengers. How intense then was My abhorrence (of them)!

51 Couldst thou but see when cast into the fire they are terrified with no escape, and are seized from near at hand,

52 And say: We now believe therein.

Chapter 35: The Angels

7 Those who disbelieve, theirs will be an awful doom; and those who believe and do good works, theirs will be forgiveness and a great reward.

8 Allah verily sendeth whom He will astray, and guideth whom He will.

26 Then seized I those who disbelieved, and how intense was My abomination!

36 But as for those who disbelieve, for them is fire of hell; it taketh not complete effect upon them so that they can die, nor is its torment lightened for them. Thus We punish every ingrate.

37 And they cry for help there, (saying): Our Lord! Release us; we will do right, not (the wrong) that we used to do. Now taste (the flavour of your deeds), for evil-doers (disbeliever) have no helper.

39 He it is Who hath made you regents in the earth; so he who disbelieveth, his disbelief be on his own head.

Chapter 36: Ya Sin

8 Lo! We have put on their necks yokes reaching unto the chins, so that they are made stiff-necked.

9 And We have set a bar before them and a bar behind them, and (thus) have covered them so that they see not.

10 Whether thou warn them or thou warn them not, it is alike for them, for they believe not.

31 Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them

38 And the sun runneth on unto a resting-place for him. That is the measuring of the Mighty, the Wise.

39 And for the moon We have appointed mansions till she return like an old shrivelled palm-leaf.

40 It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor doth the night outstrip the day. They float each in an orbit. {Muhammad is speaking of day and night and hence was of the impression that the sun orbited the earth, rested in the evening and could not overtake the moon in its orbit. The moon rested in a mansion and would at times appear smaller (like a shrivelled leaf), which we know today to be the result of its angle vertex relative to the sun.}

43 And if We will, We drown them, and there is no help for them, neither can they be saved;

63 This is hell which ye were promised (if ye followed him).

64 Burn therein this day for that ye disbelieved.

Chapter 37: Those Who Set The Ranks

31-35 Lo! we are about to taste (the doom) this day (of resurrection) they (both) are sharers in the doom. When it was said unto them, There is no God save Allah, they were scornful

36 And said: Shall we forsake our gods for a mad poet (Muhammad)? {The Arabs viewed Muhammad as a mad poet, obviously saw no enlightenment in his teachings, but were compelled only because of the sword.}

38 Lo! (now) verily ye taste the painful doom

40 But single-minded slaves of Allah {Muslims};

41 For them there is a known provision,

42 Fruits. And they will be honoured

43 In the Gardens of delight,

44 On couches facing one another;

45 A cup from a gushing spring is brought round for them,

46 White, delicious to the drinkers,

47 Wherein there is no headache nor are they made mad thereby.

48 And with them are those of modest gaze, with lovely eyes. Pure (virgin) as they were hidden eggs.

63 Lo! We have appointed it a torment for wrong-doers.

64 Lo! it is a tree that springeth in the heart of hell.

65 Its crop is as it were the heads of devils

66 And lo! they verily must eat thereof, and fill (their) bellies therewith.

67 And afterward, lo! thereupon they have a drink of boiling water

68 And afterward, lo! their return is surely unto hell.

82 Then We did drown the non- believing slaves of Allah.

162 Ye cannot excite anyone against Allah except him who is to burn in hell.

Chapter 38: Sad

2 Nay, but those who disbelieve are in false pride and schism. How many a generation We destroyed before them.

8 They are in doubt concerning My reminder; nay but they have not yet tasted My doom.

14 Not one of them but did deny the messengers, therefor My doom was justified,

26 those who wander from the way of Allah have an awful doom.

27 That is the opinion of those who disbelieve. And woe unto those who disbelieve, from the Fire!

33 Then he said: Bring them (disbelievers) back to me (David), and fell to slashing with his sword their legs and necks.

49-52 For those who ward off (evil) is a happy journey's end, Gardens of Eden, wherein, reclining, they call for plenteous fruit and cool drink and with them shall sit bashful, dark-eyed virgins, as chaste as the sheltered eggs of ostriches. Surely that is the supreme triumph. Let every man labour to achieve it.

55 For the transgressors there will be an evil journey's end, Hell, where they will burn, an evil resting-place. Here is a boiling and an ice-cold draught, so let them taste it, and other torment of the kind in pairs (the two extremes)!

59 Here is an army rushing blindly with you. (Those who are already in the Fire say): No word of welcome for them. Lo! they will roast at the Fire.

79 Satan said: My Lord! Reprieve me till the day when they are raised. {Let me stay around on earth to mislead humans.}

80-81 He (Allah) said: Lo! thou art of those reprieved Until the day of the time appointed. (Allah allows him)

82-83 Satan said: Then, by Thy might, I surely will beguile them every one, except your single-minded slaves among them.

85 He (Allah) said: That I shall fill hell with thee and with such of them as follow thee, together.
