For the first piece performed by Irene Koc: Jin Yang Zhao by Quan Jihao
In the two senior age divisions, the Chinese pieces were, as you can
imagine, longer and more complex. Obviously that didn't faze
17-year-old Irene Koc from Bridgewater, New Jersey who actually was
the double winner, taking first prize overall in her age category, and
receiving a special citation as the best performer in the new Chinese
work. The title of this one translates as music of "Long and Short" as
the composer Quan Jihao from Jilin Province alternates folk tunes and
dances with a tone cluster at the base.
For the second piece performed by Irene Koc: Petrarch Sonnet 104 by Franz Liszt:
Now earlier on today in the showcase, we heard 17-year-old Irene Koc
who was cited for the best performance of the required Chinese piece.
Well she returns as the first-prize winner overall in the upper teenage
category and she played the Petrarch Sonnet 104 by Franz Liszt.

This Wednesday at 9 pm, we continue the celebration the Year of the Monkey, which officially began on Monday. We'll also hear performances by the seven-year-old prize winner of the International Young Artist Piano Competition, Ella Kim, followed by showcase alum Jessica Wang and other young keyboard talents. Numerous WQXR premieres are featured this week, as well, including works by Chinese composers Ai Ping Jing, Li-ly Chang, Zhong Ron Lo, Hu Wei Huang, Quan Jihao and more.
