The Klan was created in 1865 by veterans of the Confederate army. Its purpose was to restore and maintain white supremacy while resisting the efforts of the Republican party. The group is known for their violent and controversial methods which even led to murders. Their efforts in resisting reconstruction and the abolitionist movement was halted due to their extreme actions. A backlash against the group had ended what was known as the first Klan. The second Klan emerged in 1915. The growth of the second Klan was quick after the first World War. It was at this time that veterans were trying to reenter into the workforce in addition to the large amount of immigrants coming to America. The second Klan reacted to the immigrants and migrants by preaching racism as well as Anti-Catholicism, Anti-Semitism, Anti-Communism, and nativism. (Ku Klux Klan in the Twentieth Century)The KKK and "Invisible Man" So far there has been no appearances in the novel by the KKK however many of the characters' actions are similar to that of a KKK member. Also, the main character is being put in situations where he can't win. This suggests how hard life is and also how politically little was being done to fix it. Back then the KKK had become so popular that officials began supporting them and therefore slowed down reconstruction and political reform. This lack of change is certainly portrayed in the novel. Another historical accuracy provided in the novel is the act of brutality towards African Americans. The opening scene in the book is similar to the actions of KKK rituals whether it be a public whipping or a tar and feathering. Both were seen as entertainment for white supremacists of that time. These actions were practiced to rob African Americans of their dignity and also to punish anyone who was out of place.
