Changes in plant sexual phenotypes defies the glossarial limitation of plant sexual identities. They could change according to their own merit/abilities at status quo to any sexual phenotype, they want or are intended to change. This means that at status quo, the plant exists as female* with its flowers at a certain stage of reproductive development and adding a certain hormone/substance the flowers become male or the plant is male in this season, but when environmental factors have changed locally, etc.  it germinates to be a female, the latter has been usually the product of old studies or what other applicable situations,  but as what I emphasized it now defies the glossarial limitation of sexual identities and plants can choose the sexual  phenotype(s) they want according to their abilities of changing. So is there still a need of terminologies such as monoecious, dioecious, etc. now that there is such thing as an advent in biotechnology and other advanced sciences/ manipulative technologies  or as a result of their long evolutionary experience make them deviant to what they were sexually formerly?

* (taken from my theoretical biology page)3/11/2012``Additional plant that could transform sexual phenotype is the Nephelium lappaceum (rambutan). An addition of NAA, a plant growth hormone can convert the young female flowering buds to male flowering buds- both are said to be functional reproductively.(search online for reference)
