Dutch language classes
The Dutch lessons are given in two semesters: one from October until February and one from March until July. The lessons are 90 – 120 minutes a week in the evening, and are given in the centre of town.
Our courses are very popular, to the extent that we can't always offer everyone a place. The courses are offered by passionate volunteers and don't only aim to teach you the basics of the Dutch language, but also fulfill a social function.
The courses are offered to PhD candidates and employees of Utrecht University. Partners/spouses are welcome to join. The odd Master student is accepted if there are enough places available.
Courses usually begin at 19:00 or 19:30, depending on your teacher and/ or level.
An e-mail anouncing when registration opens will be sent to everyone who has registered their e-mail address with the ING mailing list. This is usually sent 2-4 weeks before classes start.
Course levels
UU-ING offers the following course levels:
Course 1 teaches you how to talk, read and write about yourself and others, and about everyday topics such as work and/or studies, your country of origin, grocery shopping. It takes you roughly to the international A1 level. Grammar includes: subject, object, verbs in present tense, possessives, questions, articles ("de" vs "het"), adjectives. Of course you will learn the rules of Dutch pronunciation. Teaching language: English.
Course 2 teaches you the more advanced basics such as how to make appointments and how to talk about health (care). It takes you roughly to the international A2 level. Grammar includes: different word orders, conjunctives, the present perfect and/or simple past. There is ample opportunity in this course to improve your pronunciation. Teaching language: a combination of Dutch and English.
Cursus 3 heeft als voertaal het Nederlands. Je uitspraak is verstaanbaar en je spelling is niet perfect maar wel goed. Tijdens deze cursus vergroot je je kennis van de Nederlandse grammatica en woordenschat. Het eindniveau zit halverwege A2 en B1 volgens het Europees Referentiekader. Wij noemen het B0.5. Cursus 3 wordt vaak gecombineerd met cursus 4.
Cursus 4 heeft als voertaal natuurlijk het Nederlands. Tijdens deze cursus ga je weer een paar stappen verder met je woordenschat en grammatica, maar je krijgt niet alleen les uit een boek. Je maakt elke week ook kleine opdrachtjes. Je moet bij voorbeeld thuis een krantenartikel lezen of in de les iets vertellen over je week. Het eindniveau is ongeveer B1 volgens het Europees Referentiekader. Cursus 4 wordt vaak gecombineerd met cursus 3.
Cursussen 5 & 6 nemen soms de vorm van conversatiecursussen aan, maar andere keren zijn ze schoolser van opzet en wordt er door middel van een boek opgeleid tot ongeveer niveau B1.5 en B2.
