1981 Rex Mays Classic
Network: ESPN
Date and time: June 7, 1981, 2:00 PM
Format: Live
Length: 3 hours
The race was televised live and flag to flag on ESPN, billed under it's "Auto Racing '81" series. Billed as the "Rex Mays 150", it was the first IndyCar race shown live on ESPN. The first hour or so of the coverage featured a recap of qualifying, which had happened the previous day. Due to the short length of the race, post-race coverage was much longer than normal, lasting around half an hour with extensive interviews, as well as a feature on safety hosted by Larry Nuber.
