What is this class about?

Part of a 2 course series of study preparing you for DP film, which is a college level film class. In the DP program students are required to complete an extended essay, comparative analysis, and a Documentary Film as well as complete in depth analysis of film techniques and concepts.

MYP Film I

Students will investigate film and its function as entertainment, an educational tool, and aesthetics of production. Students will practice analysis and critique of feature and short film productions as well as become familiar with industry standard terminology. Handling and use of video equipment will be explored as students create original works in genres including: short film, commercial, interview, and instructional videos. The principles of art and visual storytelling will be a focus as students learn the skills of screen writing, storyboarding, production, direction, acting, lighting, audio, and post-production (editing). Formatives will be assigned and students will need to be self-motivated and self-paced in order to meet deadlines. Due to the nature of video production, and the wide variety of not only equipment, file formats, and editing softwares, this class will require a fair amount of independent individual problem solving through inquiry. The course will introduce students to the concepts, terminology, and processes to support success in DP Film.

MYP Film II

Only students who have successfully completed MYP Film 1 at Imagine may enroll in MYP Film 2. This is normally a majority asynchronous class. Students will refine the skills they were introduced to in MYP Film 1, and will delve further into the technique, narrative, crafstsmanship, & analysis of film-making. Students will explore the history of film & the work of influential film-makers as models for their own productions. Developing competence in film analysis, students will be required to produce increasingly mature and insightful reflective responses occasionally connecting the films to political, social, and/or cultural issues. Demonstration of growth through advanced audio visual and editing techniques (sound design, motion graphics, lighting, and camera work) will be expected of the MYP Film 2 students as well as experimentation with new techniques and genres. Students will have production queues with independent projects that allow them to continue to practice acquired skills. This course will continue to prepare the students for Film at the DP level.

Media Expectations: During in class viewing of media/films/sharing assignments. Please do not distract or add commentary during film viewing. Be respectful of others by focusing on what you can learn as a cinematographer and film maker. If you find yourself tempted to blurt out commentary to the people around you, move voluntarily to a location where that will not be a temptation, or you will be moved disciplinarily. I.e. don't be that annoying person who talks through a movie and ruins the experience for others. Those people may receive alternate assignments and/or be removed from class.

Keep it classy! While you may have liberty to watch movies of all ratings at home, during school we need to keep our examples and discussions pg-13 rated as much as possible. This is not to say that you can't share ideas from R-rated movies, just not R-rated ideas, images, video clips, language, or anything else. When in doubt check first with teacher and your parents. As a general rule of thumb, if it's ok with the MYP Director, it's ok with me. You must also respect your parents' guidelines for your media exposure.

Also, during class any media shown in class should be appropriate for pg-13 audiences unless all students have signed a permission slip. You are responsible for removing inappropriate lines/lyrics, etc from any media you choose to use for class. If you are found to have accessed inappropriate content while in class on our computers or your own device, you will lose those privileges for a significant amount of time.

Media Resources:

There are also several useful links for online resources available on the useful links page of this site.

You can also see many of these resources on youtube on my youtube playlist.

For videos: Load videos on you-tube or one-drive and post the link on managebac messages (I can then add it into a playlist for the project so that it is ready to go)

I strongly suggest you do NOT wait until the last minute to upload videos to allow buffer time to resolve technical difficulties without it being late.

If you ever encounter an error message saying your video is too long, then you most likely need to verify your youtube account.

Here is how to do that: 1. Go to your youtube, click my channel, 3. Click on the Gear icon for your account settings, 4. Go to status and features, 5. Find verify my account. 6. Google will text or email you a verification code, enter that code and you're done.

Equipment:

If you would like to check out equipment please be sure to sign it out here.

Grading Structure:

In this class the majority of your summative assignments will be team projects; each project will be created in a different way and need to match up to the rubrics as created by the IB program. This may look very different from project to project. Ergo, it is important that you ask questions and request project specific feedback regularly if you wish to excel and achieve high marks. I am glad to advise and guide you through your projects; however it is ultimately your responsibility to seek that guidance out when necessary.
