JWOC 2011 - Wejherowo, Poland

http://www.jwoc2011.pl/

Five Irish runners are competing at the Junior World Champs in Poland. Cillin Corbett, Jack Millar, Colm Moran, Josh O'Sullivan-Hourihan, and Conor Short have spent 4 days training in the beech and pine forests near Gdansk in northern Poland. Much of the terrain consists of hills up to 50 m high, but highly runnable and with excellent visibility. Other training areas are more reminiscent of Swedish terrain - lower hills and marshes, but still very good running.

Tomorrow Sun 2nd the competition starts off with the Sprint, the Long Distance is on Mon 3rd, the Middle Qualification and Final are on Wed 5th & Thur 6th, and the final race is the Relay on Fri 8th July.

Internet access allowing we hope to have updates and reports from the team as the competition progresses.

22 June 2011

EYOC 2011 - Czech Republic

Simon & Allan organised the January training weekend on Crossmurrin. In bitter wind with snow visible on the hills the juniors persevered with short & long leg training and interpreting the Crossmurrin vegetation. An evening session on training, exercising and stretching in the comfort of Gortatole outdoor centre had everyone warmed up for the Frostbite event in Navar on Sunday.

Ireland 3rd at JHI!

For the 2nd year in a row the Irish Juniors outran the Welsh to take the Judith Wingham Trophy at the JHI, held in Gortalughany & Necarne in Fermanagh.

England dominated both relay and individual competitions. Points after the Individual races (run in conjunction with the Northern Irish Champs) were England 80, Scotland 51, Ireland 44, Wales 41. Scotland pulled ahead in the Relays but the Irish juniors ran consistently, with some sparkling performances, to increase their lead over Wales.

Results and splits of Individual and Relay competitions are up at http://www.niorienteering.org.uk/NIOA/index.php?Results. As well as plenty of solid results there were 4 Irish prizewinners - Jack Millar (M18) & Caoimhe O'Boyle (W14) both 2nd in their classes, and Aine McCann & Niamh Corbett 3rd in W18 and W16 respectively.

Scores and Irish results on the JHI 2011 page

February mid-term training was in Cos. Down & Louth, organised by Greg & based in Delamont Outdoor Centre. The weather was quite benign for Ireland though not comparable with Portugal. 16 juniors survived 4 gruelling days of competition and training - the Leinster league event in Rossmore on Sun 11th, followed by a day's training on Slieve Croob, training for middle distance in Tollymore & long distance on Carlingford. There was no let-up in the evenings as John Kremer talked about psychological aspects, Igor Stefko taught self-massage and talked about Slovakia & JWOC 2012, and everyone practised on routegadget, splitsbrowser & attackpoint. In their spare time the juniors were brought rock-climbing!

The JWOC 2013 team has been selected:

W20 Niamh Corbett, Aine McCann

M20 Niall McCarthy, Eoin McCullough, Jack Millar, Jonathan Quinn.

Team Leader Greg McCann.

JWOC this year takes place in Hradec Králové in the Czech Republic between Sun 30 June & Sun 7 July.

Portugal O Meeting

Photoes at http://picasaweb.google.com/103057440084748805491

Eleven members of the Junior Squad (accompanied by 5 adults) were at the POM last week. There were a few glitches: the Start draw was very uneven, and despite tales of shorts-and-t-shirt weather last year the weather was rather Irish, bitterly cold at first, then cold & wet. But to balance these drawbacks the Portuguese were friendly and relaxed, prices were cheap, & the orienteering was terrific (though the W15s might have liked a little more challenge) - 4 days of orienteering mostly in fast open pine forest with some very complex contour areas, with the bonus of the night Sprint, a manic dash among the alleys of a seaside village.

The competition specially in the older in the Junior classes was fierce, best result was Niamh Corbett 4th in W15 with Cliona McCullough just behind in 7th. Best of the boys was Laurence Quinn 11th in M17 just ahead of Jack Millar & Cillin Corbett.

The junior squad was well represented at the annual Jukola relay, at which over 15,000 orienteers and 2,000 teams congregated at Mikkeli in Finland. Niall Ewen (2nd leg), Conor Short (4th leg) and Colm Moran (6th leg) were running for the all-Irish team that finished a respectable 321st position. Ruairi Short ran the last leg for Tullinge SK's second team, who finished 190th, while Nick Simonin ran the 'long night' leg for OK Tisaren's second team who finished 116th. Click on the positions for detailled results. Norway's Kristansand OK took first place in a close finish involving Daniel Hubmann, Thierry Guergiou (Kalevan Rasti, Finland, 2nd) and Emil Wingsted (Halden SK, Norway, 3rd). All in all, a fantastic experience
