Most cells including many cells that have action potentials tend to have a negative inside resting membrane potential. In most cells, the resting potential depends primarily on the diffusion of positively charged potassium ions out of the cell. In the example shown below, the resting potential is -70 millivolts. When potassium diffuses out of the cell, that current creates a diffusion potential.
