Ivabradine (structure shown to the right) slows the heart rate by binding to the HCN4 protein component of funny channels in the pacemaker region of the heart.When ivabradine binds to funny channels, it blocks the movement of sodium ions and reduces positive current flow into pacemaker cells and slows their rate of depolarization (see the diagram, below).
Ivabradine is used to treat some heart disease patients.
