Rotating Mask Illusion : Why do some concave images appear convex? My project hollow faces and images look at illusions like the rotating mask illusion in which the front of the mask is convex and appears so, but the inside of the mask is hollow (concave) yet it creates the illusion of a convex mask. The Physical principles follow the theme of the Reflection and Refraction, that we see an object because light from the object travels to our eyes as we look along a line at the object. For example the definition of image location is the location in space where light appears to diverge from. Because light emanating from the object converges or appears to diverge from this location, a replica or likeness of the object is created at this location. This is why we see a convex image an outward face when in reality it is concave a hollow face because light diverges when the mask is hollow and creates a replica of the outside of the mask.
