Hollow Faces and Images Rotating Mask Illusion

FADE IN:

NAOMI : Hello, I am from Harmony Public Schools and my PBL project follows Hollow Faces and Images, In particular the Rotating Mask Illusion.

DISSOLVE TO:

Hollow Mask illusion is pictured.

NAOMI: Why do some concave images appear convex? My project hollow faces and images looks at illusions like the rotating mask illusion in which the front of the mask is convex and appears so, but the inside of the mask is hollow (concave) yet it creates the illusion of a convex mask.

DISSOLVE TO:

Retina Diagram is pictured.

NAOMI: First, let's realize that information of the 3D world is lost when projected on our 2D retinas, so our perceptual system has to reconstruct this, and while this reconstruction takes place we get most things by relying on our prior knowledge of the world, there are retinal images that can be interpreted in more than one way (e.g. any silhouette).

DISSOLVE TO:

Optical Illusions are pictured.

NAOMI: An optical illusion is characterized by visually perceived images that differ from object reality the information gathered by the eye is then processed in the brain to give a perception that does tally with physical measurement of the stimulus nerve.

DISSOLVE TO:

Diagrams of Reflection and Refraction are pictured.

NAOMI: Let’s look at the Physical principles, they follow the theme of the Reflection and Refraction which are that we see an object because light from the object travels to our eyes as we look along a line at the object. For example the definition of image location is the location in space where light appears to diverge from. Because light emanating from the object converges or appears to diverge from this location, a replica or likeness of the object is created at this location. This is why we see a convex image an outward face when in reality it is concave a hollow face because light diverges when the mask is hollow and creates a replica of the outside of the mask.

DISSOLVE TO:

Demonstration of rotating mask

NAOMI: Here we see the hollow face illusion and how the image appears to be convex as it turns even though it is concave.

DISSOLVE TO:

STEM subject logos are pictured

NAOM: My stem project also included connections to ELA in which I wrote a Narrative Essay about a personal experience. Stem projects useful not only because we learn about sciences and mathematics but we learn to connect all subjects.

DISSOLVE TO:

Harmony Logo Pictured

NAOMI: Thank you for watching Harmony Public Schools
