正因为有了较为充足的经费支持,在老师的引荐和帮助下,我将前往澳大利亚 的QUT(Queensland University of Technology) 进行访学。
Life in Fujii Lab at Kyushu University
About Me
Welcome, and thank you for visiting our lab page!
My name is Siyu Shen, and I am currently a third-year PhD student. You can also visit my personal homepage here: https://sites.google.com/view/siyushen
I joined Professor Fujii’s lab in the first year of my master’s program, so this is now my fifth year in the lab. Through this short introduction, I would like to share my experience of studying and living at Kyushu University with students who may be interested in our lab and research topics.
Research Topics
My main research focuses on the relationship between financial materiality and corporate financial performance. In today’s global economic environment, identifying which non-financial factors have a real impact on firm value is both a challenging and promising area of research. Recently, I have also started exploring topics related to supply chains, because I would like to understand corporate sustainability issues from a broader perspective.
Throughout my research journey, Professor Fujii has given me a great deal of support. From choosing a topic and building the research framework to handling data and completing the first draft of a paper, he has always been patient in answering my questions and has offered me many new ways of thinking about problems. Thanks to his guidance, I have been able to make steady progress every year and produce meaningful research outcomes. This pace of research has helped me learn many new methods and ideas, and it has also given me a strong sense of achievement whenever I complete a paper, give a presentation, or submit my work.
Research Output:
Some of the papers I have worked on include:
1. How corporate climate change mitigation actions affect the cost of capital
Y Wang, S Shen, J Xie, H Fujii, AR Keeley, S Managi
Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management 31 (6), 5139-5154

Scholarships and Research Support
During my PhD, I received the K2 SPRING scholarship, and this year I was also selected as a JSPS DC2 Research Fellow. This fellowship provides about 200,000 yen per month for living support, along with additional research funding.
For international students, having stable financial support is extremely important. It reduces financial stress and allows us to focus more on research, attend conferences, purchase necessary data, and take part in international academic exchange.
Because of this support, and also with Professor Fujii’s recommendation and encouragement, I am planning to visit QUT (Queensland University of Technology) in Australia this year as a visiting researcher. I am very excited about this opportunity, because it will allow me to broaden my academic perspective and learn more about how my research topics are discussed internationally.
At the same time, I truly feel that Professor Fujii strongly supports students in both research and daily academic life. Whether it is applying for scholarships, attending conferences, going abroad for research exchange, or dealing with difficulties in our projects, he is always willing to help. He is also very hardworking himself, actively pushes forward his own research, and has solid research funding and academic resources. Because of this, students in the lab have many opportunities to join conferences and engage in academic exchange. For anyone who wants to seriously pursue research and continue growing, this kind of environment is incredibly valuable. Academic growth depends not only on personal effort, but also on being in a place that offers guidance, resources, and opportunities.
Life in Fukuoka
Besides research, I think Fukuoka is also a very comfortable place to live as a student.
The area around the university is quiet, which makes it a good environment for studying and research. At the same time, transportation is convenient. It takes about 30 minutes by subway to reach the city center, so whether you live near campus or in downtown Fukuoka, commuting is quite manageable.
Fukuoka is also a very livable city. There are many delicious restaurants and great places for shopping, but the city is not overly crowded or stressful like some larger metropolitan areas. People here are generally very friendly, and these make it easier to settle in and feel comfortable in daily life.
Final
If you are looking for a lab where you can seriously pursue research, continue growing, and at the same time enjoy a supportive academic and living environment, I think this is a very good choice. My five years in Fujii Lab have given me many opportunities that I had never imagined before, including publications, scholarships, international research visits, and academic exchange. Because of that, I truly enjoy being part of this lab.

My name is Wang Xinyu, and I am currently a third-year PhD student in the Fujii Hidemichi Laboratory at the Faculty of Economics, Kyushu University. I am from Jinan, Shandong, China. After receiving my master’s degree in 2022, I came to Kyushu University in 2023 to pursue my PhD with the support of the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship, which I applied for from China.
My research focuses on the financial and market implications of corporate social responsibility activities, with particular attention to how firms’ ESG practices affect firm value and market pricing efficiency. My current work examines corporate behavior and strategy in carbon markets and their impact on firm performance. In my research, I mainly use Stata and Python for empirical analysis, including panel regression, multilevel linear modeling, difference-in-differences, and machine learning methods. So far, I have published two papers in Business Strategy and the Environment and Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Management.
The Fujii Laboratory has an open, friendly, and energetic academic environment, with a strong emphasis on communication and collaboration among students. Professor Fujii provides careful and thoughtful supervision, encourages discussion, and offers constructive feedback on research. He also encourages students to participate actively in both domestic and international academic conferences. The laboratory organizes activities such as welcome parties for new students, graduation gatherings, and sports events, which help students integrate into the lab community. As an international student, I have felt well supported in both my academic work and daily life, which has helped me adapt smoothly to a new environment. These experiences have broadened my academic perspective and contributed greatly to my growth as a researcher and communicator.
In addition to its strong academic atmosphere, the laboratory also values a healthy balance between research and life. In my free time, I enjoy playing badminton, hiking, and camping with friends, which helps me maintain a good balance and stay focused during my PhD.
