Pendulums have ideal properties for time keeping. And Galileo Galilei was the first person to properly study these pendulums.
This started when he was in a Cathedral in Pisa, Italy:
Galileo observing the swaying of the chandelier in Pisa Cathedral, 1584. He thought how is it possible that the candelier is going up and fort in a constant rate. That is when he started to wonder about it and finally designed a pendulum to kept his clock going.
