Class 7 - Removing Griefers and Returning Their Objects

During special events, our group members may be asked to join a security group and provide parcel or sim security. If someone starts griefing, we will want to remove him and his objects from the location. We need to be careful to take action against the right person, and we need to carefully return only the right objects.

    • Step 1: Determine the griefer's name. Be positive that you have it right. Don't take the word of a random bystander, or even the sim owner. Double check yourself or get confirmation from someone else in your group. Once you're sure who it is, let the others in the group know his name.

    • (Steps 2, 3, and 4 should be done at the same time if possible, possibly by several peacekeepers coordinating together)

    • Step 2: Freeze the griefer

      • Firestorm viewer - skip to the next step

      • Non-Firestorm viewer - Right click on the griefer and select "Freeze." This will keep him from moving around and dropping any more griefer objects for 30 seconds, allowing you to take the next actions against him.

    • Step 3: Ban the griefer

      • Firestorm viewer - right click on the griefer's name in the avatar radar window and select "Parcel Eject/Ban" or "Estate Kick/Ban," as applicable. You may have to right click on him twice before you will see the Eject/Ban menu choice.

      • Non-Firestorm viewer - Click on "About Land" and select the "Access" tab. Add the griefer's name to the "Banned Residents" list and click "Apply."

    • Step 4: Eject the griefer

      • Firestorm viewer - N/A (you ejected him in the previous step)

      • Non-Firestorm viewer - Only after you know that he is on the ban list, right click on him and select "Eject." Banning him first ensures that he won't be able to return after you eject him.

    • Step 5: Remove the griefer's objects - two possibilities.

      • If you are the parcel owner - Click on the sim name at the top of the screen to open the "About Land" window. Click the "Objects" tab in that window. Click the "Refresh" button (circular arrow) to refresh the list of objects. Find the griefer's name and click on it to select it. Click the button that says "Return Objects." Click OK on the "Are you sure?" window.

      • If you have "parcel powers" so you can return non-group objects - Right click on each griefer object and select "Return." If there are several objects adjacent to the griefer object, the safest way to do this is to right click the griefer object and select "Edit" to make sure you don't delete the wrong thing.

The Firestorm viewer is well suited to peacekeeper security work. Using Firestorm, you can eject and ban residents and return their objects without needing to get close enough to right click on them. Banning a resident manually can take a long time, depending on the speed and accuracy of your typing.

To eject and/or ban a resident:

  • World > Nearby Avatars

  • Right click on the avatar's name and select "Parcel Eject"

To return a resident's objects:

  • World> Area Search

  • Click "Refresh" (you may see objects outside the parcel in question)

  • Click the "Owner" tab to sort by owner (sorts on Second Life name, not Display Name)

  • Click on the first object you want to return, then shift-click on the last object you want to return

  • Right click on the selected objects and select "Return"

Use Highlight Transparent (Ctrl-Alt-T) and turn off particle view (Ctrl-Alt-Shift-=) as needed to view the griefer's objects. You should know how to use your power ring's scanner to find objects also. Practice these skills during griefer attacks in the sandboxes so you will know how to use them when needed.
