Tips to File an Abuse Report by Kristin Linden

Kristin Linden:
Hello everyone! I would like to thank everyone for being here and for all the awesome work you all do. First off, I would like to introduce myself. I’m Kristin Linden, the Supervisor for the Customer Account Operations Team, otherwise known as the Governance team. My goal with this presentation is to help everyone enjoy Social Islands (and other areas) by explaining what my team and I are looking for when an Abuse Report is filed.
An abuse report is created by a Second Life user (Residents or Lindens) when an abusive action is taking place in Second Life. We review every single Abuse Report that gets sent it, which can be anywhere from 400-500 Abuse Reports in a day.
One of the most important things you can have on your Abuse Report is a screenshot. Once you press the “Report Abuse” link, it will screenshot for you to begin your Abuse Report.
How is a screenshot valuable? It helps my team and I see exactly what you are reporting.
Let’s look at an Abuse Report like a picture book, the picture, if it’s possible, needs to tell the story of what is being reported.
-You will need to have the Resident’s name & Display name in the screenshot.
-You will need to make sure the Resident you are reporting is the same Resident in your screenshot.
-If you are reporting an object you will need to have the owner’s name of the object and the object’s name in the screenshot.
-You will also need to make sure the Maturity Rating along with the Region name is visible in the screenshot.
-If you are including a chat log, please make sure the chat log is of the Resident being reported is clear for us to read.
(Even if the chat log is in a different language, we have our ways of translating the text)
**We do not accept notecards as evidence of chat due to the possibility of it being tampered with. **
Assault > Shooting, pushing, or shoving another Resident in a Safe Area: This kinda already explains what this category is for. This is one of the hardest things to investigate since there isn’t a lot of evidence that can be provided.
If there are other Resident’s around while this is happening, please have all of those Residents involved send in an Abuse Report on the same Resident who is acting out.
This, however, does not mean to have your friends send in a report when your friends weren’t there to witness the assault or weren’t assaulted themselves. Only Residents who were involved in the assault should send in a report.
Do not copy and paste the same information as your fellow Residents into the description. We will need each story to be from that individual's point of view.

You may also include the “Bumps, Pushes & Hits” Log under your “Help” tab and place that into your screenshot for more evidence.
Disturbing the peace > Excessive scripted object: If there are excessive scripted objects with the intent to grief.
Please make sure the correct Resident it being reported.
Please make sure that your screenshot includes the object & owner’s name.
Disturbing the peace > Repetitive spam: Spam is defined as constant unwanted messages that are not classified as advertisements (Ex: Repeated rude remarks, Teleportation links, L$ begging)
If you are able to “Unsubscribe” from the Advertisement then it’s not spam.
If the “Unsubscribe” instructions/button doesn’t work or if it isn’t available, please send in an Abuse Report.
Your screenshot needs to include chat log of spam.
Now, if the advertisement is Moderate/Adult in a General Region, it would be best to file the report under the category “Inappropriate content or conduct for Region Rating”.
Harassment > Targeted behavior intended to disrupt: Constant harassment
Make sure, in your screenshot, you have the chat log of their harassment.
If you are engaging with the harasser, talking to them & not blocking them, then it is not harassment.
If you feel that the person’s harassment/threats could result in a Real Life incident, it’s best to contact your local authorities.
Indecency > Broadly offensive content or conduct / Intolerance: Hate speech, racial slurs, derogatory remarks (or pictures) made against a group of people.
Your screenshot needs to have the object/item/picture (if there is one) and owner’s name of that item and/or chat log of conversation.
This can also include symbols on clothing and flags.
This does not include objects, clothing, or pictures on Role Playing regions.
Indecency > Inappropriate content or conduct for Region Rating: This applies to any objects, businesses, avatars, or advertisements that are in a General region with a Moderate or Adult rating. (G/M rated region w/A rated items)
