Google Custom Searches

Custom Search is a great way to create your own Google search engine for any topic that will search a specific collection of websites of your choosing, but you’ll need a Google account to create one.

It’s primarily a Google function for website developers to add an ‘in-house’ search engine on their website, but we can use it to develop our own customised searches when we’re looking for information from sites that we know from experience are reliable, such as NHS, Professional organisations, Higher Education research, Patient/Condition-specific support organisations etc.

To Create a Custom Search 

Go to https://cse.google.co.uk/cse/ and click Sign in to Custom Search Engine

1. Sign in to your Google Account

2. Click Add to create a new search engine

3. Under Sites to search enter a web address, domain or set of addresses you want to be searched

4. Set the Language (English)

5. Give your search engine a Name

6. Click Create

To Edit your Custom Search Engine

You can add further web addresses/domains once you’ve created a search engine – 

1. Click  Edit search engine

2. Click the drop-down arrow and highlight the search engine you want to edit

3. Scroll down to Sites to search

4. Click Add

5. Type in the web address or domain

6. Click Save

7. Scroll to the bottom of the Edit page and click Update

8. To delete a site, tick in the box and click Delete

To Find your search engine

Make sure you can return to your search engine by bookmarking it – 

1. On the Edit search engine page, click the link symbol under Public URL

2. Save the web address in your Favourites/Bookmarks
