These are the universal ranges for gunners on aircraft:
Long Range: 2.4km
Medium Range: 1.20km
Short Range: 0.5km

The gunner will report enemies and fire at them within those ranges.

Return fire does nothing, fire at will and cease fire are your only options that do something.
